The award of this World Cup to Qatar was, and remains, an utter scandal.

That won't stop me watching every single game, of it, though. I bloody LOVE the World Cup, and however unusual the timing and location of this one is, I'm not going to miss the actual games, in some pointless display of outrage.

For me it’s not outrage. It’s a bit of sadness that the greatest competition in the world that has bookmarked my life since 1970 has been hijacked by corrupt people with no interest in the game. At this stage I’m not sure what my attitude will be. I can’t work up any enthusiasm or interest but that might change. It’s just sad. For everyone. For the supporters who follow their country around the world, for the players when this should be a pinnacle in their careers, for the tv audience who shift uneasily in their seat when they look at anything beyond what’s happening on the pitch.

In balance I would say that I have predicted WC’s be shit before without it coming to pass (USA springs to mind), and perhaps this will be a great World Cup. At this moment my WC mojo is through the floor.

And when I think of Maguire, Mings, and Coady it gets even lower.

In fairness, this bunch are the most likeable in generations. Marcus Rashford gets free school meals for kids, Mings speaks very well about racism even Kane comes across likeable (and a bit thick but anyway). Sure Foden and Grealish are oiks but it's a far cry from John Terry parking his Bentley in the disabled spot or Ashley Cole almost crashing his car because it was only 50 grand a week. They even - recent games aside - look like they want to be there.

In any case, Coady and Mings will be doubtful anyway. Coady isn't going to look any better at Everton and Mings has dissappeared from Villa. I'm sure we will have to put up with Maguire pointing at other people when some Brazilian has plonked him on his arse though.

Let's face it, that's where the majority of us are.

I'm with Iggle Piggle here - it'll only be Maguire on the plane. And anyway for some reason I'm a lot less partisan about England than I used to be - and it faintly amuses me that despite a decent track record, Southgate has wasted glorious opportunities to actually win tournaments by failing to pick players who are clearly better but at smaller clubs. Mind you, I still hold out hope he'll take a look at Webster for a squad place. There aren't many better English centre backs than him around if he can stay fit.
