I've seen it twice now.

I think it's brilliant and is my third favourite star wars film (Empire>Rogue One>TLJ).

I love how Rian Johnson opened it up, although I think the "earth humour" like the caller on hold was a bit off.

Why can't Reys parents they be nobodies? Anakins were (well his mum anyway). Throughout the film there is continual reference to balance. Rey is the counter to Kylo Ren, e.g another force sensitive individual with mega raw power. They can't ALL be Skywalkers. Although there's absolutely nothing to stop her having a crazy back story revealed in episode 9.

Leia flying... Well if her dad was "the chosen one" and her brother can do crazy jedi stuff, then there's no reason why she wouldn't have force related abilities.

I liked how it turned the mega battle concept on it's head plus coupled with the casino visit, it becomes an anti-war and war machinery(arms dealing etc) sentiment.

Star Wars has always been ham fisted with cliches, continuity errors, plot holes and a ton of sentimentality plus it rips off loads of other films. That's why it's popular!!

I too am amazed by the lack of understanding on here to the basics of SW. The mention of Luke becoming a "martyr", deary me, you really don't understand the Jedi mythology. As for the training of Rey, she walked away from Luke - her training was incomplete (if you'd bothered to notice the nuance of her face when she moved the rocks at the end, that pretty much summed up knowledge of the force).

Leia has always been as powerful in the force as her brother, but never felt the need to use it - the "Superman bit" was exquisite, and had my jaw dropping.

The character development of Rose was excellent and the visit to Canto Bight is where it starts to make a even more sense after her sisters incredible sacrifice destroying the dreadnought. It also serves as a wake up call to how incredibly difficult the whole Resistance/Rebellion fight actually is.

I loved every single moment of TLJ The highlight for me was the struggle between Snoke, Rey and Kylo Ren, where I really didn't know what was going to happen. Sublime, and sets it up perfectly for Episode 9. Cannot. Wait.

I’m sorry but there was no way REN was going to be killed off nor Rey for that matter, I knew within a nano second of the standoff that Snoke was smoke, why that was a surprise to you perhaps highlights your Rose tinted glasses you were wearing, you see it in 3D as well?

My inner fan-boy really wants her heritage to be something more than just junkers, just because.... but if it is that her parents are nobodies, and not obviously force sensitive, it does support the message from the end of the movie that the Resistance and the 'Jedi' aren't reliant upon the known groups and blood-lines, everyone is potentially in the Resistance and everyone is potentially the most powerful force sensitive person in the Universe (not that Rey is, yet). Which is a much more nuanced and deeper idea than the one you'd expect from a Star Wars movie.

I think this depth is where my reticence to rate the film yet comes from. A lot of Star Wars ideas get subverted and no longer is it good v evil, dark v light, there are subtle overlaps and grey areas, which make it a much more mature movie (much as Rogue One was) and perhaps once the vocal minority who dislike the film have had a chance to reflect, then just maybe, this will turn out to be the best Star Wars movie of them all, as it has more to think about, over and above the spectacle.

That said, the Mary Poppins / Superman Leia bit was jarring.

Jedi have never been reliant on bloodlines. suitably force sensitive children are taken off to be trained as chaste warrior monks with no lineage. Skywalker is an exception, so is Ben. the line between good and evil was blurred from RoJ and i understand is a rich source of plot in the extended universe (i've only watched the cartoon series, theres aloooot of books).

agree the rating will be higher on reflection, i think the problems with the film are from the add ons that fluff it out. Leia's flight was far less jarring than the fish people that resemble a hallucination from somewhere else, and the lack of any direction given to the resistance fleet what they planned on doing. and that message thing with Poe, that was crass how it was done for comedy.

I really didn't like it, it was just the Empire Strikes Back but they put the Battle of Hoth at the end instead of the beginning and then fitted in the climax of Return of the Jedi right before it (right down to the annoying little cuddly animals to sell toys to little kids). The only 'original' subplot was easily the worst one (They literally had Dickensian urchins being beaten up by cruel businessmen on a casino planet that for some reason has horse races and slot machines) and didn't actually contribute anything to the outcome of the movie.

It was just a complete mess of the film, I might have forgiven it if they just cut out about 45 minutes of useless filler and perhaps addressed some of the plot points from the previous film. But it felt more like a chore to watch than actually entertaining.

What I find interesting in the opinons here is beyond the posters who like it or hate it there seems a sizable group who haven't decided/have been baffled by it.

This makes sense to me as its a disjointed mess, with very little plot.

I think much of the audience in general are undecided/puzzled on their opinion of it (myself included).

Rotten Tomatoes
Rogue One: Critics 85% / Audience 87%
TFA: Critics 93% / Audience 88%
TLJ: Critics 93% / Audience 56%

Still early yet though, it'll be interesting to look at the ratings again in a couple of weeks.

If Anakin Skywalker was created by the Sith, by manipulating the midichlorians.
Could Rey be a manipulation again, for good, rather than evil.
Perhaps her parentage left her behind, knowing something about her birth that they didn't like or approve of?
Even Yoda said in TLJ, that she was the future for the Jedi, after he had set fire to the old Jedi existence.

Terrible writing, terrible sets, terrible acting, Luke done all wrong, Snoke done all wrong, Ren and Rei awful.

So many awful plot holes, plus scenes that meant nothing.

How anyone thinks this is even ok must have a very low IQ, or low knowledge of SW.

You must be fishing because your all powerful knowledge of SW means you can’t manage to spell Rey correctly.

the Force created Anakin, not the Sith. the force has light and dark sides, so any force sensitive being can be tempted to the dark or light.

Yoda knew Rey had taken the books (you missed that tiny shot didnt you...)

Yes I agree, but I'm sure that Palpatine, did have knowledge of this, but we never really found out if he'd did use the force to create AS.

Yes I did master

Its funny how often critics and film goers opinions diverge, 37% is a massive gap(Fake news?). I take no notice of critics since they panned and wrote a load of crap about the first Divergence film which I thought was brilliant. But agree with you here 100%.:)

Not the real one
I give it a 7.5/10 for Star Wars, 9/10 for general entertainment. It was engaging all the way through and has a few chill moments that only Star Wars can give. But when my 10yr Old daughter tells me it’s ‘the best film I’ve ever seen dad’, then you know they are doing something right.
I am still a bit frustrated because they didn’t explain who snoke was. On the other hand, i love the Yoda and Luke scene, and the quality of the movie and story is strong. The basis for a Star Wars film is a very basic, yet strong story.

Exactly. This echoes my view. This is a far better film than all other Star Wars films (other than Rogue One) but it's a less good Star Warsy film as it goes off in directions you'd not expect.

I'm sure this is where the division of opinion arises from. Some people WANT a direct retread of Empire, which this is not.

And, at least in my case, my reticence to rate it immediately isn't due to the story being 'a mess or 'all over the place as it clearly isn't, but because I feel there are layers of story and subtlety that deserve consideration. I feel a second viewing is warranted, not because it's confusing, but because there are elements of the story and subtext that deserve it.

I think when I've finished my deliberation I may rate this up there with the best of the lot.

I have a question.

Was Chewbacca roasting a Porg on the fire? I would say so as thats why the other porg was weepy. Therefor letting all those critters on the Falcon was Chewies food supply.

Ben Shapirro pointed that there is no gravity in space so you cant bomb a dreadnought like a WW2 bomber. Missed that one.
