a galaxy far far away

Ah well, look, best of luck to the lad.

We'll have loads who outgrow the u23s but can't nail a place in the senior squad. Will keep an eye out for Malmo.

It is I think, a matter of whether the Sussex lads are good enough to cut it at the best levels. It's all well and good taking only local kids but if none of them will ever make it what's the point?

But as a counter point here, four of the most promising of our U23s are from Sussex. Cox is from Portslade, Sanders is from Horsham, Maguire Drew from Crawley and Tilley from Billingshurst. They have all managed to climb the levels of the academy even with outside competition.

...... and they've all been moved on without making it to the PL with the Albion.

Thank goodness for Sanchez. The expense in bringing over must be dozens of young players from abroad over last few years must be huge. Is it worth it.? Very few will get a chance all the time we are fighting relegation
Even more galling when Brentford pick up a player from Worthing.

Leaving for Malmö FF either today/tomorrow (Allsvenskan transfer window closes tomorrow) or in the summer.

Sorry to hear that, I thought he’d get a chance in the first team.

That’s the standard though. And we have a high one. No free rides to get in our first team squad, you have to be special. How it should be.

Brighton have gone from nowhere to having the biggest percentage of minutes given to Academy trained players this season in the entire EPL.
No surprise that many players won't make it but you're a tough crowd if you think overall our u18/u23 loan set up is struggling either for non UK players or those from Sussex or if you think Potter isn't open to fast tracking academy players into the squad if he thinks they are ready. .

A few Worthing lads in the football league & Harrison Reed in the PL. Unfortunately the bar for the PL is that much higher I think we are probably over achieving with our quota of Sussex lads (Dunk, March, Webster) as it is

Not thinking that at all - just replying to a post highlighting four Sussex lads as some of the brightest prospects in the U23s, and pointing out that sadly they all didn't make it..

All you need is one or two to come good and it's paid for itself. In the current team we have Sanchez, Dunk, March, White and Connolly.

Also, some of the players that don't make the cut, we sell on for a profit or with a sell on clause.

So it's not all money down the drain.

Ah the old Black and White brigade. It's about creating a pathway to the first team not a guarantee of appearing in it. As we get better the number of players capable of making the grade diminishes. Who would've thought it eh?

This. When you consider we’ve been buying internationals (Moder, Karbownik, Veltman, Tau) that can’t get straight into our 1st eleven, you do have to be a bit special to make the leap from the U23’s.

I always got the impression that the successful U23 team we had about two years ago with amongst others Connolly, Gyokeres, østigård, Cochrane and Roberts had many players who would have easily stepped up had we gone down into the Championship. Luckily that never happened.

This years players that may fall into that category could be Jenks, Weir and Cashman (not that I think they won’t get into the 1st team).

I remember reading a while back that Bayern Munich consider every player from their academy to become a professional a success story. With the competition in football for squad places every player like Gwargis that gets the opportunity to play for a living is a success for the Albion.
