Is it just me or has this increased dramatically in recent times?

I've had to ask a number of people to stop rabbiting recently. At a Hot Chip gig I had one goon who was stood in front of me keep turning around and talking over my shoulder to his mates who were behind me. I had to politely ask some gents at an Avi Buffalo gig to refrain from talking. Their music is quite delicate and these chaps were really pissing a lot of people off. I also ended up having a blazing row with a girl who could not stop talking to her fella during an LCD gig. I asked her politely, but she told me to f*** off. Charming eh?

If these people's chitter chatter had value then fair enough. But, the girl especially, it was seemingly words for words sake. Nothing she said seemed to have any worth and she seemed compelled to say something as opposed to nothing. I did tell her this, then she got a bit nasty. She got very nasty when I asked her is she understood the idea behind 'sometimes less can be more?'

Should I ever own a venue you can rest assured that Tubthumpers will have a no talking and no camera phones policy at all times. The night club Berghain has a no mobile phone policy. If they see you with one then you're out the door. They have yet to ban talking.

Grrrrrrrrrr.

I asked some people behind me to stop talking we we last went to the cinema (some time ago) he told me they were media students and were discussing the plotline of the film. I told him if he didn't shut up he'd become a medical student discussing nasal fractures. They moved. Ten minutes later a voice bellowed somewhere behind us 'will you please fuckin shut up.

Maybe we should just go and see very loud bands? I've seen Motorhead a number of times. You could fire up a 747 at one of their gigs and you would not notice.

Agree totally with every point. Festivals can be even worse as people might be seeing a band they have little interest in and don't care if they rabbit through the whole performance.

You wouldn't talk through a film at the cinema, and whilst gigs are slightly different, people shouldn't talk over the music. The odd whispered comment in your mates/partners ear between songs should suffice.

I was at a Plan B gig (not really through choice) and was amazed at the amount of phones being used for pictures and videos, especially during his more well know numbers. From what I've seen before the pics and videos come out in awful quality, with the artist only a tiny blur in the distance, so I'm not sure why they bother.

On the other hand my wife and her friends were told off for signing and dancing and generally enjoying themselves when Elton played at the cricket ground last time.

Good point, at the recent Brighton Scissor Sisters gig Ana Matronic asked the crowd to refrain from filming the gig on their phones. She said that in trying to preserve the moment you are not being in the moment. Quite. And as you say the footage captured is generally shit quality. Given the point Ana Matronic raised I do wonder what the motive for some people's gig attendance is. I have some great memories, thoughts and feelings from live music....I do not need some crap footage to remind me. I like to remember things how I remember them. It's not too difficult.

I have to admit to going to this gig as well, I did not get told off for dancing like a gay lord though.

Mrs HB&B is usually quite reserved. There were some letters in the Argus a few days later about people not being able to see Elton because people were dancing and waving their arms . Shock horror.

I would have thought gaylord dancing at an Elton concert would be actively encouraged.

And don't get me started on the cinema ...... staggering fall in manners. Every time I go now I encourter people talking, not just the odd whisper, right through a film. So bloody thoughtless.

No, and this is the issue. If it was banned it would not be a problem. When I open my music hall come down and see what a difference my talking and mobile phone ban makes.

Not sure about encouraged but I had a couple of G&Ts and what with the lovely sunshine I felt compelled.

There were loads of people talking at the Gruff Rhys gig, in a church! Ended up moving to avoid them. I really hate it, what's the point of being there if you're not going to get into it? It's not like a club where you've gone to socialise, you've gone to watch an act ffs.
