I don’t have an issue regards price as that is down to how much someone will pay and whether we would sell. However there is a cost whether it is buying a replacement now or the investment made earlier. The recruit team isn’t free either ……

Which is why I said in my post, that we "employ a top recruitment team - and a very expensive one". The squad (and the team) need to evolve and improve, otherwise it quickly deteriorates. Bringing in new blood (which we already have) means there isn't room for everyone - so some players have to go (and if other clubs are willing to pay us good money for them, all the better - that is, after all, the plan).

We can't name a 30 man squad, any more than we could get away with putting 13 players on the field!

Too slow, offers nothing…..

I was amazed when the safe answer in the 'i was wrong about' thread, at the end of the season, was:-

'I was wrong about Groß I thought he was done'.

The guy is a legend and class is permanent.

Add to that a section of NSC that wants to bin off perfectly good players. IF we lost those three we'd NEED Propper and AJ unless there are significant incomings.

On that basis - bringing in new players in this window to replace any that leave - you'd be in danger of losing the likes of Moder, Caicedo, Alzate and MacAllister who have already been brought in as part of the succession planning (and have cost us around £20M) - they wont hang around if we're forever bringing in people to block their path to the first team.

Besides, the very idea that there's a scenario in which we'd NEED AJ .......................

.. not really. But 30 is no age. I wouldnt be surprised to see him sign a new three year contract soon.

An excellent player.

A lot of the (unfair) criticism came as a result of his second season when he suffered an ankle injury vs Fulham, missed a pen, and then spent a long time out.

He has been a constant since we arrived and a lot of the matchday moaners would do well too remember his assists, before the too slow comments come out.

One of our most intelligent players

You just have to look at his assists this season to know we'd be lost without him.

The desperate need to rush to the next new kid on the block, really does cheapen what we're watching now (and hopefully for a few more.years to come).

I can't work out if the 'is this a joke?' response to the story is just dismissive of Groß or yet more Lil Brighton can't possibly sell a player to Liverpool, hang up.

Who of the present crop would be his direct replacement? I don’t believe any of them are so I would expect a replacement to come in. When Biss goes we have a like for like replacement but for Pascal it’s not so clear cut.

Are people spoofing here or deranged by a lack of Albion action or sunstroked or what? There is literally no story. Reminds me of one of BGs (rip) 'football rumours'. This is total nonsense. No denying his importance to us. But come on guys.

It looks like a story about Liverpool struggling to score goals. Find a good, potentially cheap player who provides lots of them. Put two and two together.....

I’m not sure how someone in Italy would know more than plane trackers here. Their website looks like the Daily Mail. They’ve got to feed news.

It’s an odd story though.

Couldn’t disagree more.

I’m really worried that we don’t have a like for like Biss replacement. Moder is good but does not have the quickness of touch, dynamism or mobility yet, he is a different sort of player. Caicedo is probably the closet but might not mature in the Premier League (similar to Biss) for 3 or 4 years. We have no one who can do this stuff yet:

But not many teams do.

As far as replacing Groß (and I think he is brilliant btw), he is not actually in the 1st 11 for me.

——Welbeck———————Maupay———-
————————Trossard————————-
March——Lallana—-Bissouma—Lamptey
———-Webster—Dunk——White————-
————————-Sanchez————————

I think that he is a touch behind Lallana because the Englishman is a better on-pitch leader, a little more creative and faster but, as I say, not much in it.

Clearly Adam will start less than half our EPL games next season so we do need someone pretty solid doing the creative stuff in the middle of the park or on the right.

In Alzate, Moder & Mac Allister, we have 3 internationals who I think could be the central creative.

If people think that Groß should be playing RWB, the recruitment team hasn’t done it’s job in finding some specialist back-up for Lamptey & Veltman in the summer.

It’s hard to argue that with the exception of Dunk, Groß hasn’t been our best EPL player over our 4 top flight years but we shouldn’t stand in his way if he wants to join his countryman and play champions league football (if the price is right). He is replaceable, Biss is another matter.

Biss is rare in that he is a holding player that covers two positions. Hardly any Prem teams play that. We'd just play two orthodox midfielders. That's what most teams do and we can totally afford to do that with a fit Lamptey and March.

Controversial opinion but I think with the number of deliveries from set pieces he makes, we should have scored a lot more with the height and talent we have in the side (other than upfront). I think his set pieces are over-rated.

I like him as a squad player and he’d get couple thousand minutes a season if up to me, but I wouldn’t put him in the top bracket of players at the club.

That depends on your expectations from set pieces.

If when a corner is awarded you cheer in the expectation of a goal, then yes you're going to be disappointed.

The likelihood of a goal from a corner is minimal, the fact that Pascal delivers so many is mightily impressive.

You are right though despite his excellent contribution to assists and goals, last season, his talent was still criminally underused.
Going someway to explain why we were 4th from bottom for the majority of the season.

Most effective creators of chances in the Premier League across past two seasons.

1. Kevin De Bruyne
2. Jack Grealish
3. Pascal Gross

Maupay and Trossard should be both massively flattered you have them both in the starting XI this season ahead of Gross. I for one would be a bit surprised if that ends up being the case.
