For those who go to the games how different is his position/role in recent weeks to that in his first season with us? In that first year he played in an advanced position in front of the midfield and behind Murray. On TV it looks like he's playing in a similar area now. Is that right?

It seems that way to me.
It's undeniably his best role.

I daresay he might have made a decision to leave, at the end of the season, when he was being asked to play at right back.

He's certainly been playing a more advanced role over the last month or two. The big difference, however, is that in 2017/18, CH played a very rigid and consistent 4411. Pascal went out on both wings, creating overloads, and putting in crosses for Murray. This season we have a much more mobile and rapid striker in Welbeck, and a notably more fluid system. This has meant that, at times, Gross has played in an advanced two supporting Welbeck (usually with either Ali Mac, Tross or Mwepu) or where we've played with two players hugging the touchline when we have the ball higher up the pitch (ususally March and Tross). All of this has meant that Gross (and his midfield and wide colleagues) are popping up running into space and/or in less pre-determined places (look at where he was when he received the ball for his disallowed goal against Southampton, or his goal against West Ham).

That CH 4411 was incredibly effective until rivals worked it out. CH had a fantastic first season.

Trouble with Gross is that he is really good in a lot of positions and it has always been difficult to place him with players who complement him. He has an outstanding level of skill and a brilliant football brain. He only lacks pace but there have been a lot of class players like that. He is the sort of player you could build a team around but age is probably now against that happening with younger players coming through. One more year at least will help us improve further and then perhaps he can get himself a decent contract back home in a decent side. He has been one of our best ever signings and will go down in Albion folklore for his Gross Turns at least.

This is spot on. Certainly against West Ham he was in that "number 10" spot a lot with width variously coming from Cucurella, Veltman and March (but sometimes Gross himself). It's his best position IMO. Hope he signs that contract.

All of a sudden the manager throws them up front, where they had been earlier in their careers and they were an absolute revelation.

It's actually quite frustrating that we hadn't been doing this before

we have such good width now and the way we poked the ball around against wh was pure class , veltmans goal was great as well for that reason and Dannys was a great header 3 great goals and an extra 2 .2 mill....noice.

I really don't think pace is overrated: all -- or, if not, pretty much all -- top/world class players have it. What that means is that you have to compensate in other areas if you don't have that and, in terms of technique, engine and especially intelligence, Pascal does that in abundance.
