Brighton & Hove Albion defender Uwe Huenemeier says the Checkatrade Trophy is of benefit to both the younger and senior members of the side.The Seagulls featured six players with first-team experience in the 2-2 draw at Stevenage on Tuesday night, but saw Jesse Starkey find the target, likewise fellow under-23 players James Tilley and Will Collar in the penalty shoot-out.Uwe Huenemeier
He said, “It was another good test for us. It’s much better that the younger lads play in these games than in under-23 matches, because the physicality is different and you are playing against older players, some who have played many professional matches.
“It’s also a good test for the more experienced players in the side, who maybe are not playing in the first team at the moment. These are competitive fixtures, so it helps keep you match fit and you know that you are always going to be in a tough game because the teams we face always raise their game.”

Albion conceded a second goal at the Lamex Stadium with just four minutes remaining, but there was the consolation of an extra point gained on the night following a 4-3 penalty shoot-out success.“We should have been further ahead at half-time, which would have made it much easier for us in the second half.
“Fair play to Stevenage though; they came back into the game and I know Rob [Sanchez, Albion keeper] was quite disappointed with the goals conceded.
“Things like that happen, but he’s still a young lad. He’s 18 years old and he has to learn from that. The good thing is that we made the best out of the situation by getting the extra point at the end in the penalty shoot-out.”
Huenemeier actually blasted his spot kick over the bar, but was delighted with the other penalties.
“The English boys showed me how it should be done! It was a good result for us in the end, and helps our position in the group.”
