O/T - Windows Media Player help needed

I am having a helluva time trying get WMP to work properly - works fine with music, but throws a complete paddy and closes when I try and play a video file (annoyingly the video often plays perfecly well behind the window telling me that WMP has encountered a problem).

I think it is something to do with Codecs, but I have no idea how these work.

I think the problem has been longstanding - I normally use itunes, but I am trying to sync WMP up with my PS3. If there is a better program, any and all help gratefully received.

Believe it or not, I have actually tried turning the PC off and on again - alas to no avail. Any ideas?

PS - sorry if this has been covered before, but I couldnt find the search function. Should I be allowed to use a computer at all?

Sod WMP, use GOM player instead.
