This is something that used to happen a lot when we had students.
My original method was to use a coat hanger or thickest core mains cable that I had lying about...
Would work but would take ages...
Plunging is what I found in the end to be most successful.
The earlier mention of a cut down 1 or 2 litre plastic soft drink bottle is exactly what I do now.
Hold the lid end and just ram it in and out of the U-bend. As soon a s it forms a vacuum, the block give way.

I would recommend you scoop the loo out first so the toilet is as clear of liquid as possible. That way you won't send shitwater everywhere (including all over you).

Get yer Marigolds on, brace yourself, reach just around the u-bend, and the chances are, the offending object will be just around there, easily pulled out.

Probably wouldn't use the Marigolds for washing up again after though.
