I know what you mean. We were told while we were there that the president was earning $19000 a month, including pay for being a former vice-president. Apparently he said he needed that much because his wife lost so much at the casino. Having just met with the protesting banana plantation workers who had walked down from the north, I can't say I had much sympathy for him.

Pretty hard to visit it any other way, really.

I just got back from Nicaragua, only went to Leon, Granada and Ometope Island but had a fantastic time and met loads of great and friendly people.

I would recommend it to anyone (except the yanks maybe)

Ometepe island is so nice and peaceful, been there a number of times and hopefully again this year.
Yeah, Nicaragua is full of friendly people, i'm glad you enjoyed it.
