If you want the gritty run down look, take the Overground out to Hackney Wick and take a wander around the industrial estate and down towards Swan Wharf. Plenty of moodiness around there if you ignore the odd hipster incursion arts centre which has crept in. For example Hepscott Rd https://goo.gl/maps/IkZXY or White Post Lane https://goo.gl/maps/Km6eZ or Smeed Road down to Dace Road https://goo.gl/maps/GmdWa
Then when you're done you can repair to Crate for a few brews and pizza: Sorted. http://cratebrewery.com/venue/crate-brewery-bar/#template-container

In fact just a stone's throw away from Vauxhall station is the old BT building Keybridge House, if it's still there. Virtually abandoned and has a quiet railway arch right next to it in Miles St. You can go for a pint in The Vauxhall Griffin afterwards which is alright.

Keybridge House building is still there as I pass it on the train on the way in to Waterloo. I have had a few meetings in that building and it was one of the worst I've ever had the misfortune to frequent. Shoreditch Exchange being a close second.
