Deepest, darkest Sussex
Never got the chance to miss, but bit of a slap in the face to be at least position 9

Very telling that Wilder didn't call on Connelly unless absolutely necessary.

Good man management of a young player already under pressure.

Yep. Would have been disastrous for his confidence if he’d missed.

Fans negativity does have an effect on a players performance; confidence can be drained out of them by continuously being labelled as 'shit' or 'not even a footballer'. It's even worse when they move to a new club and instead of having a new start they're followed by 'fans' negativity from ther previous club telling fans of the new club that they are shit.
Yes, of course he needs to win them over. But why do some knobs have to make it harder?

Is this more of a modern phenomena due to social media?
Or did the tabloids do the same damage previously?

Spot on, AC Boro career would basically be done if he missed a crucial penalty there, very wise move. Regardless of his antics, some on here would do well to remember he is still our player
