BBC just reported that 22 thousand Liverpool fans were in Basle last night even though they were only allocated 9k tickets. Seemed to allude to this being a good thing as it is far better to be there than just watch it on TV apparently.

We've come a long way since the late 80's, when there were no ticketless fans travelling.

1) they bought up a lot more than 9k tickets in the stadium, probably around 15-20k in the stadium were Liverpool.
2) they put on a giant screen for a 'fan zone' in the centre of Basel
Wasn't exactly a bunch of people turning up without a ticket. They had places designated to watch the game.
