I think I understand your post, Brighton offerd him a contract but it would have been a massive reduction in wages so he kept on looking

He was alright last season and probably would have done a job. As has been said though, sounds like he was holding out for a better offer and burned his bridges with us.

Because, as he suggested this morning, he was waiting for a better offer. When they asked him if he'd sign now, his reaction was as if Poyet had told him to bugger off.

To be fair he was OK for us. I wouldn't say he was great. (Unless you mean he was great a few years ago when he played for the Villa)
