Right, my laptop isn't exactly in the best state as it is (new one on the cards fairly soon hopefully) and I've managed to overcome a few problems with it lately.

However, I'm a bit stumped at the mo. Now, when I log on, all I get is a black screen with the mouse pointer in the middle. You can hear that the laptop stops loading once the screen says 'welcome' after I've entered my password (on Vista). So basically, I have no start menu and taskbar, no background, no desktop items whatsoever etc etc.

The only reason I can type all of this is because i can still use some features. If I do CTRL + ALT + DEL and get the task manager up, i can use it to run new programs - like Safari which I'm using right now - but not everything will open.

For example, iTunes won't open at all, Internet Explorer just opens and does nothing (not even 'this page can't be displayed' malarkey) and I can't open the majority ofthings in Control Panel.

Anyone have any ideas at to what else I might be able to try to keep it up and running a bit longer? I tried System Restore the other day back to a place where it worked fine, but still no joy. I considered re-installing Vista but thought I'd see if anyone had any ideas before doing that.

Cheers

Bring it up in safe mode (press F8 when Windows starts) that should get it going, sounds like you graphics driver is buggered.

First thing I tried was the 'on/off' option.....
And if i can get to the option of defrag-ing then I may as well give it a try!
Cheers

Cheers, I'll have a go at that and see what happens.

Either way it looks like I'll be getting a new laptop sooner rather than later I reckon...

When you have Task Manager open is explorer.exe listed under running processes? If not, try running it.

I'm not convinced it's anything to do with the graphics driver, particularly if it works ok in safe mode.

Sounds like either some critical Windows system files have become corrupt or you have a nasty dose of malware (more likely).

I'd suggest trying to install some anti-malware programs in safe mode (if you can) and let them do a full scan and see what they find.

There are some actual important aspects that you should consistently accumulate in apperception if application your laptop. If your laptop happens to freeze, the a lot of accepted acumen is a virus infection. A virus infection can acutely accident your laptop's software and operating system.
