That's exactly what my other half does, all her "books" are bought through Amazon and then they can be read on a variety of both Apple and non-Apple devices.

As for reading on the iPad, it's perfectly fine until you find yourself in a sunny place, you really need to be in the shade to avoid having to squint to read it or even be able to read it at all.

Just buy the book !! And you can probably buy a book cheaper second hand, then when you have read it you can stick it on eBay.

No you don't. You go to Amazon on your iPad, you browse, you select your book, you download it and it appears on your iPad. No iTunes required.

Indeed, but can also be done entirely on the device away from iTunes.

I don't think iBooks is used that widely compared to the Kindle app and content.
