He played much like he's been playing for us for most of the season: kept moving around and worrying defenders but hardly ever getting a ball played to him when he made a run. Scotland spent a lot of time tapping the ball around the edge of Slovenia's box in the hope of being able to pass it into the goal, then someone would usually get impatient and snatch at a long-range shot. Neither tactic really played to CMS's strengths.

He did get one decent one-on-one with a defender on the break but couldn't quite make himself enough space to get a good shot away.

To be fair, the number of times he had the ball at his feet probably just scrapes into double figures. But a lot of Scotland's chances in the first half came from the midfield getting forward into spaces behind the strikers, whereas after CMS went off those spaces disappeared and little of Scotland's possession in the Slovenian half (when they could keep it) looked dangerous.

I'm not saying that that was entirely attributable to CMS (there were personnel changes every five minutes in the second half so it was a bit confused, and Charlie Adam going off badly weakened their build-up play) but they looked noticeably more threatening when he was on the pitch, even if he wasn't often directly involved.

It's just a shame that he's started playing for them after Scotland seem to have abandoned "hopeful punts upfield" as their only attacking strategy - he might have made more of some balls over the top.
