He must be impressing someone then!

MIDLAND referee Stuart Attwell has won the chance to officiate at prestigious internationals next season – despite making a mistake labelled the ‘worst in footballing history’.

The 26-year-old, from Nuneaton in Warwickshire, has been confirmed on the official FIFA list for 2009.

It caps a meteoric rise for the Midlander who was guilty of one the biggest ever gaffes by a man in black.

In a Championship match between Watford and Reading in September he awarded a goal to the home side on the advice of his linesman – despite the ball having crossed the by-line two feet to the right of the post.

Attwell has only refereed four Premiership games this season. Last year was his first in the Football League, seeing him take charge of 32 games.
