Gus Poyet has admitted Albion have no chance of winning games if they continue to leak goals at such an alarming rate.

The manager highlighted his side’s defensive deficiencies after last night’s 4-1 drubbing at Norwich.

The defeat, hot on the heels of Saturday’s 3-0 setback at home to Leeds, means the Seagulls have now leaked 35 goals in 18 games, the second-worst defensive record in League One.

Poyet said: “In the first half for long periods we were very good on the ball but there is still a problem at the back. We are trying to sort it out.

“When you are in a situation where you are conceding goals you have to be careful about everything you do.

“There are no excuses and no complaints. That is the reality and we have to accept it.

“We have got the quality to get results but if you concede the quantity we are you have got no chance.”

Albion remain fifth bottom but the bottom three before last night – Tranmere, Wycombe and Southampton – all won and fellow strugglers Carlisle pulled off a shock 4-3 victory at MK Dons.

Poyet must decide whether to make any loan signings before tomorrow’s 5pm deadline for temporary transfers. He may be tempted to bring in another goalkeeper, with Michel Kuipers still sidelined by a groin injury.

An additional headache for Poyet is a knee injury which ruled out top scorer Nicky Forster.
