Hello everyone. Apologies for this brazen appeal for your cash, and at the worst time to be asking for it too. If this is beyond the bounds of good taste, I shan’t be at all offended if the moderators choose to remove it. However, if they’d like to go the whole hog and make it a sticky, I would be absolutely thrilled.

Those of you on the running thread might remember me talking about this ages ago. Three years ago I signed up to take part in the For Rangers Ultra. It’s an endurance event across Kenya involving five marathons in five days. The race is self supported. I shall be carrying my kit with me every step of the way, which will probably be an extra 11kg of weight. It will be hot and takes place at a relatively high altitude, which will make the first couple of days a little more challenging. Creature comforts will be minimal. Showers are not guaranteed. They have had them in the past in the form of a tank with a hose and shower head on a gantry, but apparently the local elephants come and wipe them out occasionally. Climbing into damp, smelly running gear each morning will be the order of the day. Just to be clear, I have never taken part in a challenge like this before. Marathons in Blighty are the silliest running thing I’ve done before now.

Covid put a whacking great hole in my plans, as the 2020 and 2021 events were cancelled. This time it seems like it might actually happen. I’m due to fly out on the 10th and the race begins on the 14th. The repeated cancellations have meant I’ve had quite the journey to get here. I’ve covered over 4,500 miles on foot in training. I bust my ribs last April and tore ligaments in my left ankle last September. Last weekend I turned the same ankle on a tram track in Bremen while out on a run. It’s bruised right now but I think I’ve dodged a bullet, as the damage seems to be nothing like the last time round.

The event raises funds for the rangers that protect the iconic wildlife across Kenya’s various conservancies, as well as Save The Rhino; the charity previously beloved by Douglas Adams and known for the famous costumes seen when “the crash” takes to the streets of London for the marathon. I’ll be participating with a small team on behalf of Save The Rhino and will need to take the occasional turn in the costume myself.

Some of you were kind enough to donate to this when I first opened a fundraising page back in 2020. My grateful thanks go out to each of you. That page lapsed as the event was cancelled. I have created a new page, which is linked below along with some videos for those of you that might be interested as to what this is all about.

I need to get this done. It’s taken over my life for three years and there’s been countless chores I’ve swerved while training. I turn 50 the week after I get back (when I’ll be spending a couple of nights in Brighton to celebrate). I’m really getting too old for this sort of malarkey.

I appreciate that times are ridiculously tough right now and only about to get harder. I’ve no right to expect the kindness of strangers, particularly when all I’m offering is good karma and a slightly hornier world, so to speak. Thanks for listening.

Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
You are a complete gentleman. Many thanks indeed.

For what it's worth, I've also adopted your "Price of a pint" principle. Doing good an imaginary pint at a time.

Thanks Jim. It doesn't seem a lot, but over a year, by donating to all the requests on here, it does!

I was even on the running thread when you first came up with this idea and yet my first thought was you were raising money for a flag for the Orange side of Glasgow

Now we've got that out of the way, happy to donate and make it a sticky.

The ultimate honour! Can’t thank you enough Mr GuinnessBoy. I shall be sure to ping some pictures once this whole escapade is done.

Brighton play Palace while I’m out in the middle of nowhere. I might not even get the score for three days!!!

Donation made, OP thank you for highlighting this, these causes mean so much.

..... and good luck!

Huge thanks for your generosity and encouragement. I am genuinely humbled by everybody’s support and will try my utmost to be worthy of it.

There’s just something about the plight of animals, trying to get by in a world we continue to mess up for them, that really gets me.

I've been donating to many wildlife charities virtually as soon as I was old enough to hold a bank account, plus having a very friendly (to UK) wildlife garden. We can make a difference :)

The very, very best of luck to you and everybody taking this on. I hope you will be having a pint of Tusker or two to prepare. Looking forward to seeing pics.

Keeping the Tusker down to a minimum for now for hydration purposes. I gather there’s a lot of it on offer after the final stage though.

I DID IT!!!!!

It’s been the adventure of a lifetime. Undoubtedly the hardest physical challenge I’ve ever taken on but all the more rewarding for it. I’ve adored the entire experience and, after three years planning leading up to this, I’m left wondering what happens next.

56 participants began the event. 44 completed the entire course, representing a dropout rate of 20%. I placed 22nd, spending 36 hours and 21 minutes out on the course. For a chap that only wanted to finish, that’s a thrilling outcome.

I’ll post some proper pictures when I’ve enough data back in Blighty to do so.

If you possibly have the means and ability, please consider donating to all the wonderful work that goes on to protect the wildlife in Kenya and rhinos across the world.
