Fruit machines in pubs are inherantly depressing.

The jackpots of £100 are to tempt people when they've had a couple of pints. Statistically out of all gambling these are the worst for a payout by per cent. If you put a £10 note in you'll be very lucky to get back £7. They're impossible to beat and the old saying is 'the fruit machine will only pay out if it wants to'. I think fm's are the hardest to walk away to cut your losses. The number of times I've stuffed a tenner in the machine, ended up with getting on to the feature once or twice and collecting £3 + repeat chance. Mug. And the crazy thing is? I study correct score and first goalscorer patterns from the bookies and for that £10 I could have put it on say Sergio Aguero to score first @ 3/1 and ended up with £40 easily most Manchester City matches but feel it's too short at times.

For anyone who does like a gamble, I've been given a 'tip' (if 8/1 is classed as a tip).

Top Beak, 17.05 Haydock. Jim Crowley, top of the flat jockeys championship currently is on it. De Sousa who is 2nd is on the favourite, but their isn't much difference between the favourite and Top Beak.

Like too many tips, ya just fell short.

I used to be like £2 bet on the football and think that was a big bet and then bung £20/30 in the fruitie in a pub without a care, there must be a scientific study on the reasons why

I don't understand them and find them boring. Had a mate who I ended up avoiding as all he'd do when we went for a pint was park himself at a fruit machine and plough coins into it, ignoring everyone that was with him.
I equate fruit machines with the archetypal "pub bore".

The Aussies have taken fruit machines ('pokies') to a whole new level. Their 'Returned Servicemens Clubs' and'Bowling Clubs' are all pretty lush inside, all do subsidised meals and drinks, all show live racing and take racing bets over the bar and have a full-blown casino crammed with pokies clamped on the side. Members benefit from cheap food and meat raffles. But then again they need to, as many of them are pumping far more money into the machines than they can comfortably afford to lose. It's a major problem down under.

Killed the live entertainment scene too, pubs down here leave a lot to be desired IMHO (and many other opinions too).
