Agreed. I have never had an issue with gambling on the whole, people can do what they like with their money. I do have a problem with what the betting industry has become though. The complete saturation of adverts which just normalises gambling as if it should be part of everyone's daily routine. The terrible adverts which seem to be either be written by 10 year-olds or that character down the pub who thinks he's hilarious. Followed by the token "be gamble aware" after thought at the end.

I've really noticed it creep into every day conversation, including on NSC. People are always going on about betting odds on everything from football scores to political resignations. Why does everything have to have odds?

Sadly, it's started creeping into Canada since they legalised online betting a couple of years ago. I'm watching the Chelsea vs Luton match and betting company pops up at the bottom of the screen every 10 minutes or so.

It didn't cost you 20k though, did it? it cost you 5p.
It’s knowing that the chiefs at 365 for example pay themselves multi million pound bonuses whilst hundreds of customers lives are in ruin, the truth is the government and companies don’t care about people losing money because of the money it makes them both, if they really did they would be caps on how much people can play, ie’ you’d have to apply to be able to bet large amounts.

The unbelievable thing is that I could open an account now and put my entire life savings on a bet and no questions would even be asked, it’s shocking.

That being said I know this thread is going to be full of gamblers so sorry for derailing it guys :lolol:

It’s the unique addiction that can and does wipe out household solvency and prospects in a second.

The fact that so many tories are sponsored by the betting industry speak volumes - the would make enough money without advertising - should ban that like cigs at a minimum.

I very rarely bet on a game and only small stakes so this isn't as hard luck as most, but in 2020 when City were on their way to win the title, stamping over everyone, I did an 5 game acca in June. The banker game was City (top) beating Southampton (wobbly - finished one place above us in 16th). Obviously City lost 1-0 to Southampton and the other 4 came in.

I had a £5 bet on Brighton beating Blackpool 5-1 at 100:1 a few years ago.

We were all over them 5-0 up, a few minutes to go and Blackpool win a penalty ( Yessss!). 5-1 into injury time….Barnes scores a 6th 🥲🥲🥲

Ironically then, it was Blair who open the betting floodgates.

He sought a soft touch small state, as he did with The City and financial regulation, licencing laws. Picturing Brits acting like grown ups.

I had a 5p ew lucky 31 donkeys years ago and I had 3 winners 14/1 and two at 33/1, it was Tony Blooms horse High Standing that let me down at 25/1 coming second costing me about 20k.

He is forgiven though.
I remember watching one of High Standing’s early races, he was at Yarmouth and was obviously being run for his handicap mark to be assessed. Vince Slattery had the ride and the horse was pulling so hard that he was actually galloping sideways. Anyway good old Vince managed to hold on and I think he ended up 4th (he’d have won by 20+ lengths if they wanted to). Its a shame I had a small bet on at 100/1 but to anybody who knew what they were looking at you had a good horse to follow.

That’s the problem you give people an inch and they take a mile - I think it’s right you can walk into a casino now etc but just think advertising should stop

That was before everyone had a smartphone in their pocket. They didn't really account for how easy it has become to make a bet.

Someone I know (who might be reading this) had placed several bets over several months that a particular golfer ( can’t remember his name) would win sports personality of the year. Shortly before the day of the announcement his accumulated bet was around £18k. He was about to place a final £2k bet on the golfer and he was asked if he might instead consider laying off the bet by placing it on Zara Philips. He declined and Zara Philips won.

British Open, 2003. I was fishing around for a few bets, sticking a couple of quid on a few golfers. My missus clocked some bloke called Ben Curtis, because our sons name is Curtis.

500/1. "Don't be stupid".

countless tales of woe but the most recent one was last season when spangled i had 2 accas on the go one in championship and one in the prem. the championship bet was offering a 768 dollar pay out with 7 minutes left and the 4 leg Prem bet was offering 180 with the same to go , wolves away to southampton 2 nil down , played majority of game with 10 men and according to BBC out on their feet ...i had bet on 2-2 4 leg correct score was paying nearly 6 k for a 5 dollar bet ....i cashed that one out and when i looked back at the championship bet one of the results had changed and the cash out was down to 80 dollars , i was well pissed off and cashed that one out as well and went back to my music , at about 12.30 a.m here my phone starts going bonkers as all the lads in the punters club were letting me know that we had won 6 k  i had to tell them that i had cashed out , they were not impressed

mate of mine got me into the whale lounge in star city years ago , there was an indian couple in there , she was dripping with gold and absolutely gorgeous in the special indian way , she was becoming bored and kept tugging at her husbands arm , he bunged her a 5 k chip which she put on number 11 it came in , she barely flinched , obviously coated in money.
