Surprising insofar as reports (and popular opinion) had him being as far from the action and as near to his bank accounts as he could get rather than in the thick of the action. Would have been better news in many ways if he were dead as he could now become a rallying point for the fanatics. That said it will be good to see him on trial and having to face his accusers for crimes including wholesale torture and mass murder/genocide. The US and UK governments will be bricking it though in case of embarrassing revelations.

I wonder if MI6 or the CIA had someone on scene pretty fast in order to be sure he did not make it to trial ?

It was first quoted that he was " wounded in both legs" not usually terminal even to a 69 year old. Would have been helpful to lots of people if he died of his wounds and I was just speculating if he might have been " helped on his way "...
