Brentford 1957/58

Brentford's last game of the season and a win over us and they go top when only the top team was promoted and they win 1-0.
We had 1 home game left which was the historic 6-0 win over Watford to give us our first Football League promotion in our history.
I can never understand how Adrian Thorne is not on the legends wall at the Amex, he was a local lad and scored 5 goals in that promotion winning game.

I had forgotten how tight that end of season was and when we lost at Brentford we dropped to third place, with Brentford going top, Plymouth in second and us third, all on 58 points. Our game in hand we needed one point to win the only promotion place.

A little report I found about that great night

Our record home win against Watford of 6-0 at the Goldstone in April 1958 which clinched the last ever Division 3 South trophy.
We went into that game needing a point to win the clubs first ever Championship. Dave Sexton had picked up an injury the week before so 20 year-old local lad Adrian Thorne was picked for just the 7th time that season.
Thorne scored his first after 5 minutes, and just 4 minutes later he had a hat-trick and the Albion were 3-0 up in front of a League record crowd of 31,038 at the Goldstone.
Thorne scored 5 of the goals that evening, it was a 6.15 kick-off as there were no floodlights at the Goldstone then, and the Albion were duly promoted to Division 2 leaving behind them the new Divisions 3 & 4
