Bugger. Looking so good and then he chases a wide one, has a chop at it and nicks it through to the keeper... out for 48 from 57 balls.

JM Bairstow c †Chandimal b Pradeep 48 (57b 5x4 0x6) SR: 84.21

England 297-6 (86.2 overs)

England 302-6 (87.4 overs) :clap2:

Woakes 4*(6) Ali 24*(64)

be nice to get through to the close with no more damage... but Sri Lanka will be pretty happy with their efforts - especially their catching :clap2:

Close of play, day one

England 310-6 (90 overs, RR 3.44)

Moeen Ali 28* and Chris Woakes 8* will resume in the morning, with Broad, Finn and Anderson to come.

A pretty average day of Test cricket... pretty much all of the England batsmen will be disappointed to have got out, and some more than others!

The highlights of the day were the Sri Lankan catches :clap2:

Around 400 in 1st innings should ensure a comfortable win

Morning everyone. Missed all of yesterday due to a very rare Friday office attendance, but no great shakes as always prefer watching England bowl anyway. Grey and overcast with no rain forecast, should be heaven for Jimmy.

Ali dropped on 36... easy enough chance in the gully... pity after such great catching yesterday from Sri Lanka

England 320-6 (92 overs)

They could have done with that one.

Blimey.. Woakes on 8 gets a life from the keeper... couldn't have been an easier chance.. regulation nick outside off... waist high just to his right... and somehow he didn't get a gloves on it :nono:

What a difference a day makes :nono:

England 337-6 (100 overs)

Ali 43* Woakes 20*

Steady progress again for England, having given two easy chances, that's a pretty fortunate scoreline.

Woakes trapped on the back foot... looked high but they are reviewing it... oh and he absolutely smashed it into his pads off the inside edge. Shocker. :nono:

The keeper 'drop' was bizarre. Pretty much all he had to do was extend his arm to the right. Can only assume he either wasn't fully concentrating or didn't pick it. Or a combination of both.

50 partnership for Ali 44* and Woakes 31* :clap2:

Both have had a life... and making the most of it.

Moeen Ali 53* (109 balls, 6 fours) :clap2:

and he passed 1000 runs in Test cricket too :clap2:

Having taken 50 wickets, he is 5th quickest of the 21 to achieve that double milestone for England :clap2:

England 364-6 (106 overs)

Probably got enough runs already so Acceleration Time?

Get to 400 then hit out.

Their fielding this morning has been atrocious.

Woakes wafts at another one outside off and is gone this time... caught by the replacement keeper.

CR Woakes c Mendis b Lakmal 39 (76b 6x4 0x6) SR: 51.31

England 389-7 (109 overs)

Partnership of 92 between Ali and Woakes at more than 4 an over, just what England needed.
