Do you take sickies off work?

Living and working in Oz,everyone from the top to the bottom takes sickies.People consider that it is additional hloidays.

Never done a sickie in 13 years of my job. Only had 2 days off in that whole time, that was last year when I had an amoeba living in my stomach :(

If work takes the piss out of me I will sometimes reciprocate. We seem to roll along OK regardless.

Are these the 'duvet days' thing ? From what I've head it's very much accepted practice, but up to a limit (5 per year ??). Also heard that holiday allowances are lower though, so kind of balances out......

It's nice to augment your holiday time with a sickie here and there isn't? :D

I work for a local authority and see abuses of the system on a daily basis, its almost an accepted entitlement amongst a small bunch of employees. Poor management ensures that their sickness entitlement is never forcefully challenged.
Of course the other side of the coin is that I have previously worked in organizations where sick pay isn't paid, where I have seen employees literally drag themselves into work despite being in no fit condition to be there, putting themselves, and others, at risk.

There's a third part to this, where disciplinary action is taken against genuine illness adding stress to an already bad situation. I had a verbal warning and a written warning for having surgery three times in 18 months, all covered by hospital and doctor's certificates. After the second operation I was told 'Don't do it again'. To which I replied, the offending piece has been removed from my body, so it can't be removed again.
All this whilst having a union rep present.

Threads like these tend to be very self congratulatory, where those who enjoy good health can boast of their sickness record mainly, because they've been very fortunate.

We actually have a system in place that measure employer sickness and it you cross a certain measurement threshold you then go through a series of interviews etc about it.

Whilst it can cause issues with long-term sickness it is amazing how many employees change their attitudes once they go through this process.

Fair comment.....critical to sort the genuinely from the malingerers. It's usually quite easy to work out who the pisstakers are in my experience.

If this government gets their way you won't be having that union rep for much longer.

Not quite right.I'm a shift worker so I get 5 weeks and 2 days annual leave plus the standard 10 sick days.I work for a large organisation and taking sickies right or wrong is the norm this includes management as well.

Must admit although I miss the Albion and the pubs,Some of the draconian comments on here regarding sick leave are worry regarding attitudes back home.Many of the shop floor workers in Oz would consider taking sickies as a perk akin to those given to those higher up the greasy pole.

Not your money though is it? Just a polite form of theft really.

I agree with the term theft, i wonder how the Sickie boys and girls would respond if their boss was riffling through their pockets and taking a days worth of wages without asking?

Generally they are takers in life and will end up sad ba**ards.

Running a small business now for the past 6 years. I don t take time off "sick" I can not afford to do so. One of my business partners is currently extremely ill with Cancer and is in hospital for weeks at a time yet he is constantly still working even whilst in there. The fact people take random sick days pisses me right off, cost the country as a whole money, but puts a real strain on businesses especially small ones like mine. If I thought an employee of mine was taking a sickie to pop down the pub he would be gone. Luckily the guys who currently work for me are all people I trust not to do such a thing. I don t mind if your genuinely sick and need the time off as that is what a sick day is for but if your hungover or fancy an additional holiday day then you can **** right off

Not since I've been self-employed. I don't have proper holidays anymore . I love my work so I don't consider my job as work, it's great being a Porn Star.

Running a small buisness is different but here in Oz big buisness factor in the taking of sickies in their annual budgets.Infact its not unusual for people who have accumalated a large amount of sick leave to be pressured to use some of them to get the liability of the books.

The most curious thing..
. Public sector are the worst in my experience. Is it true people are told to take sick leave as they're entitled to it? I hope not..
That is not true,and both the manager and person involved would be sacked if they tried it. It's fraud unless the person is genuinely ill.
