As stated above by various posters, it is a little far fetched and 2 dimensional but its reasonably worth watching. Some points I find a tad odd though.

"Security " at the hotel for the big conference with the American general was practically nonexistant

How did he manage to smash that safe open without the 2 alleged " guards " outside the door hearing ?

West Germany seemed to be riddled with East German spies, often in plain view.

How did that Chinese bird keep her towel on in that life or death struggle with our anti-hero and go over the bannister and survive to run off untraced through a hotel full of security ?

To the point where another spy was in the hotel grounds and he just chucked down the floppy disk ?

Ohh forgot that bit, so there were 3 spies just running around the hotel.

Somewhat alarmingly but yes there were, need a security review urgently

Decided to plump for Endeavour tonight so will do Deutshland83 tomorrow on catch up...will look out for this.

PS, Endeavour was very good tonight, clever story and great characterisation.... even Superintendent Bright shows some hidden emotions.

Before finding the hidden book store, why did the girl not go straight to the Stasi after finding the copy of 1984.

the chinese bird's towel fell off - she was wearing a bodice and skirt underneath

I watched it in Germany back in November. As others have said, a potentially great storyline was way too far fetched with so many factual impossibilities and errors.

I'm still liking this despite the incredulous storyline. Mertin's handler, Lenora Rauch, must be smoking 60+ a day as every scene she has she is connected to a deathstick, even in a car on a petrol station forecourt ! That scene was surely badly edited and also completely ridiculous..... Martin's General goes off for a wee while Martin starts to fill up the car.. he shoves the nozzle in and walks off to a 4 minute conversation in a nearby car with his female Stasi handler who is smoking who then decides to take a blood sample from Martin in full view of everyone ! Martin gets back in to the General's Merc without seemingly removing the naozzle or paying for the petrol...

As for the general, he is rumbled on a foursome with the American general and a couple of Prostitutes staggering around Brussels ! The security risk bells are clanging like crazy, including the generals son who is now getting seduced by the Stasi and is turning more left wing than any of them ! It's a recipe for disaster almost every 10 minutes but somehow Martin gets away with it...

The one really good thing is some of the subtle humour concerning the East Germans at Stasi headquarters... when one finally gets a computer that takes the stolen floppy disk he sas " Wow ! Cool ! " to which his boss says " Don't say Cool ! " " OK " says the lackey " Don't say OK either ! "

[pedant alert] They're not Stasi, they're HVA agents. The Hauptverwaltung Aufklärung was the foreign intelligence arm of the East German security services - the CIA to the Stasi's FBI. There was a reference to the HVA in the very first episode

Despite the gaping holes in the plot and the implausibilities, it's an enjoyable romp

Quite. It clearly doesn't take itself too seriously and is as much a fun trip through 80s nostalgia as it is a Cold War thriller. And complaining about the implausibilities is as like moaning James Bond isn't real life.

I'm enjoying it for the cultural and pop references as much as anything.
