Thank you both. Unfortunately I think I'm going to have to wait a month or two, what with buying a house. Unless you spot anything good for £250 or less! That last one says it's a compact? Is that right?

No disrespect, banjo , but I have never heard a good word about Viking bikes. I thought I'd check, to see if this view was prevalent...Here is a review of this particular one (and another) http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/bikes/road/product/review-viking-roma-11-45621/
They are cheap, but it's a false economy. You will either be turned off cycling, or will upgrade quickly. It's worth holding on, and paying more in my opinion.
Not long to go on this one, seems quite a good price at the moment.

and that one is still nearly £100 cheaper than the black one sold a few weeks ago.Blimey, if ever there was a case of a name (in this case Specialized) selling a bike then this is it. How overpriced has that gone for!?
8 speed lowest possible spec fishing tackle groupset and wheels that he doesn't even bother to name because he knows they're bog standard. It's alarming what you get for your money on a well known brand at the moment.

At Notters' £250 Pogue Mahone has flagged him something up that's definitely worth a look. For your £250 you get something half decent to start on as the frame is proven and it's a compact so the introduction is gentle. If Notters wants to, at a later date and over time, he can upgrade the wheels and the group set and he's got himself a decent bike. But at £360 for that, over £100 over budget and overpriced before he starts, it's just crazy.
Okay, okay, point taken.
Can you geeks post pictures of you're bike on here ? I love a bit of bike porn.
If I knew how to post a picture...
I've no idea what price it was at when you flagged it up. That's why I say you've flagged up a good option for £250 there, because that's what it should really be expected to go for max in a fair market.
My point is only to concur with SB, that well known brands often seem to go for even more inflated prices in an already over inflated market.
As I said, the £250 is all I could afford now, not what I want to spend. Hope to get something for maybe £600 in a couple of months.
