Dai's boys stay alive

By ROSS GREGORY

WREXHAM legend Dai Davies last night admitted losing 10 points could be a small price to pay for keeping his old club alive.
The 132-year-old Welsh outfit halted today’s winding-up hearing over an unpaid £800,000 tax bill by applying to go into administration.

But that could make them the first club to incur a 10-point penalty under new Football League rules, dropping them into the League One relegation zone.

The Robins’ owner, property developer Alex Hamilton, has refused to accept a takeover bid fronted by former Wrexham chairman Mark Guterman.

Fans fear Hamilton is keen to put the club into liquidation and redevelop the Racecourse Ground — which could be worth up to £10million.

Former Wales and Everton keeper Davies — who played 199 games for Wrexham before retiring in 1987 — blasted: “Hamilton is not interested in football.

“He is an asset stripper disregarding the club’s long history and what it means to the fans. It seems he’s quite ruthless.

“If going into administration is the only way to save Wrexham, we as ex-players and fans, can’t decry it. When it comes to the brink of losing a club, people realise how important football is.”

Wrexham could still avoid a points penalty if a takeover deal can be done before the administration hearing, likely to be in the next two weeks.

Saturday’s home game against Bristol City will be turned into a Fans United day.

Boss Denis Smith said: “It won’t be just Wrexham fans supporting us on Saturday. I’m sure Bristol City fans and fans of many other clubs will show their support.”
