Kettle on the hob = fob [watch]

When someone was short of cash they would pawn their watch but keep the chain to wear*on their waist coat or they may not be able to afford a watch and so wear only a chain. This led to a common put down, ''what have you got on the end of that chain, a kettle?'' Thus infering that you were clearly too poor to afford a watch! The kettle reference coming from the way kettles were hung over an open fire from a chain.


My dad is 76 and an east ender, I've heard him mention something along these lines too.
