Charlton are poised to be the next club to fall into administration, with a takeover bid on the brink of collapse because of debts of up to £40m.

A group of local businessmen who had been in talks about a £30m buy-out were alarmed to discover the extent of the League One club's liabilities.

A source close to the bid said last night: 'The club are going through a slow, painful death. In strict business terms, a club with 10 fewer points, but millions of pounds less debt would be a far more attractive proposition.'

Things not looking too good for them. Cannot see them going down this season unless they get points deducted etc

That's a shame, I've always had a soft spot for Charlton - minnows who lasted for so long with the rich tosspot clubs in the premier league

Still, we need to put at least six past them this year, no charity for Charlton :yahoo:

Yet again proof that the Premiership and all it's money is not always a good thing. Fall out of the Premiership and u can be f***ed financially

Only for the clubs that spend why beyond there means and dont cover themselves against relgation with contract reductions.

Palace, Ipswich, Watford, Reading, Brum, West Brum, Wolves are OK.

Lest we forget we would have been extinct many years ago had it not been for extremely rich benefactors.

Watford and Ipswich have both suffered from severe financial problems since leaving the Premiership, so are perhaps not the best examples to use in list.
