Bus travel to London for £1?

Press Release.

Bus travel between Brighton and London has been slashed to as little as £1
>from today (Wednesday) with the launch of the UK's first low-cost internet
>bus service.
>
>
>
>Stagecoach's low-cost bus service, megabus.com, will roll out a new
>network of routes next month linking London with a dozen cities in England
>and Wales.
>
>
>
>From today (Wednesday) passengers can use the online booking service at
>www.megabus.com. The first journeys, using high-capacity double decker
>buses, will run from Monday 1 March.
>
>
>
>Trials of the ground-breaking service, based on the same concept as the
>low-cost airlines, have shown an appeal to a wide audience, including
>students, commuters, families and "silver surfers" - the over 55s market
>who use the internet.
>
>
>
>Tickets can be purchased for the following new megabus.com routes:
>
>
>
> Brighton-London
> Birmingham-London
> Plymouth-Exeter-London
> Swansea-Cardiff-London
> Bristol-London
> Bournemouth-London
> Southampton-London
> Portsmouth-London
>
>
>
>The massive expansion across the UK is in response to megabus.com's huge
>success since the first trials were launched in August 2003, with
>passenger numbers now approaching 200,000.
>
>
>
>A pilot scheme was rolled out across Scotland and several English cities,
>including Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds, with exceptional results.
>
>
>
>Brian Souter, Chief Executive of Stagecoach Group, said: "megabus.com is
>one of the biggest changes to bus travel in decades. It is simple to use
>and will make inter-city bus travel affordable for everyone. We think it
>has the potential to transform the demand for medium-distance bus travel
>in the same way the low-cost operators have done in the airline industry.
>
>
>
>"We have been absolutely delighted by the response from the public so far
>and we're confident we'll get the same positive reaction in Brighton as
>we've seen elsewhere in the country."
>
>
>
>Stagecoach has developed megabus.com by adapting the low-cost, no-frills
>approach of the budget airlines. Seats on the web-based ticketless service
>are yield managed in the same way as the budget airlines, with slightly
>higher fares for last-minute bookings or popular journeys. All
>reservations are subject to a 50p booking fee.
>
>
>
>Around 400,000 hits have been registered on www.megabus.com during the
>trial and there is an average of one booking for every three visits, an
>extremely high hit-rate for such services.

How long will it take? If it's a double decker stopping at all the stops it will take HOURS

Just had a look at the site.
If we chose the Oxord game on 6/3, we can get to London for £1, then onto Oxford for another £1.
Same for the return!!!

We could take over the buses and get HAMMERED.

Arent Oxford in the 3rd division?

Yep we play Swindon on 6/3 2004, but who knows who we play on Sunday March 6th 2005, is it live on Sky?

And its not £ and never can be as its subject to a 50p booking fee.

If you live in London, you can get to London FOR FREE.

ahem...

This is a classic Stagecoach ploy - aimed at frightening a potential competitor away.

A few months back, Stelios Haji-Ionnou, founder of easyJet, announced his own plans to launch a low-cost intercity bus service. And guess what? Now Stagecoach pop up, no doubt using the millions of pounds worth of public subsidy that feeds their worldwide profits, to ensure that Stelios abandons his plans as "too risky".

Use the cheap buses while they are there. But don't expect them to last long. Once Stelios announces that he won't go ahead, Stagecoach will revert to marketing South West Trains and Virgin Trains (which is 51 per cent owned by the Stagecoach Group) as the "only" way to get to London. But not for a pound.

Cynic? moi?

The Brighton - London service timetable in full:-

Daily

Brighton, Pool Valley Coach Station 0810 1525
Brighton, Lewes Road 0820 1535
Brighton, University of Sussex 0830 1545
London, Greenline Coach Station 1030 1745

London, Greenline Coach Station 1200 1845
Brighton, University of Sussex 1400 2045
Brighton, London Road 1410 2055
Brighton, Pool Valley Coach Station 1420 2105

Not much choice of travel times.

You could get to Oxford by Megabus on 6 March. If you travel from Brighton on the first bus that arrives in London at 1030, you can reach Oxford by 1310. You'd have to leave Oxford at 1600 to get the last Megabus back to Brighton.

So - no time to fit in a football match.

Liz's tours are safe for the moment!
