Stockdale 5 - 2 good saves but totally out of position when he came out to narrow the angle for the first. Slight question mark on the second and distribution was terrible. A shadow of his former self.

Bruno 4 - When he has a bad game, boy does he have a bad game. Usually so dependable from both a defensive and attacking perspective. Offered no support from Knockaert and Duffy very rarely covered when he went forward but still a poor game.

Duffy 4 - OK at the beginning but needs to learn how to play with the players around him. Didn't cover Bruno at all and looked more and more exposed as the game went on.

Dunk 7 - the only player to come out with any credit from the game.

Bong 4 - just not the same player since injury. Think confidence may be low but the key reason is his pace seems to have dropped. This allowed him to be a real attacking threat which he now isn't and it allowed him to recover defensively which he now can't. Quicker we can get Pocognoli in, the better.

Knockaert 5 - looked threatening in the early stages but didn't do his defensive work like normal. Subdued with the rest of the team in the second half. A frustrating performance.

Kayal 4 - again, a bad day at the office. Huge gaps in midfield with these 2 as a pairing and we were completely overrun.

Norwood 5 - think he looked ok for first 20 minutes. Distribution was generally good (apart from one howler) and was able to pick a pass. Played very much as an individual though and not as a midfield pairing like Kayal/Stephens did last year.

Murphy 5 - thought he started brightly and offered more than Skalak from an attacking perspective early on. Faded badly though and dropped to the rest of the team's level.

Hemed 4 - really poor today. Cumbersome, couldn't hold the ball up and never threatened.

Murray 6 - was never given anything to work off. Won some headers and I thought he worked really hard. Tracking back, closing players down (never thought I'd say that!) and looked like he actually cared which was more than can be said for some of the team.

Subs:

Manu 6 - at least gave us some energy in the final third.

Stephens 6 - even though we conceded soon after he came on, thought we improved slightly with him there. Must start Tuesday.

Skalak - not on long enough to judge

Overall, the poorest performance of the Hughton era that I've witnessed. Really did resemble the dark days under Sami at times. Worryingly, the team spirit that counted for so much last season (even after a couple of defeats) looks to have totally disappeared. Desperately need to regroup and go again on Tuesday - a vital game for me in determining how the season pans out.

Murray played as a wing man most of the game...he is a predator and should be in the box.

All this 'we'll be better when so and so's fit' and 'when so and so's back' , thought the idea was to mark on the performance yesterday........we were toilet and don't think anyone mentioned would have made any difference.

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
A nailed on penalty not given, dire refereeing and last season's most consistent player having an absolute nightmare. On another day the pen would have been given and the result different.

That said, these ratings are not far off. Murray and Hemed up front are the wrong combination and devoid of pace. Duffy at the back looked uncomfortable all afternoon, never quite sure whether to leave his man to Bruno. Stockdale also looked uncertain - back to his weak performances under Hyypia.

Elvis was perhaps the only 'positive', though Dunk was a deserved MOM for us.

Let's hope this is a blip - time will tell.

It wouldn't have been a penalty but a free kick just outside of the area, had it been given. The contact (and there was contact) was just outside the line.

Everyone 4; except Stockdale 5 for a couple of great saves, but dodgy for their first goal, and Dunk 8.

I think Stockdale and Kayal deserve higher marks than most other posters.

Stockdale 6 -- made a number of saves that kept the score down, distribution not his best
Bruno 4 -- very worrying performance, a number of misplaced passes in dangerous areas, and too many wrong decisions
Duffy 4 -- looks like he didn't like playing with Bruno; hopefully Connor's ready for 90 mins on Tuesday
Dunk 8 -- immense
Bong 4 -- not up to much
Knockaert 6 -- hurt them, but didn't really capitalise and made a number of poor decisions when he could have released the ball to a better placed player
Norwood 3 -- he's been bought for his passing, and there were so many misplaced ones yesterday, which only goes to highlight his shortfall in physicality and dynamism as a CM; Stephens back on Tuesday please
Kayal 6 -- I was watching a different game to most others, because he did actually manage to impose himself; I would have given him a 7, but he didn't trust his left foot when he had a fine opportunity -- this transpired to be costly, as they had the ball in the back of the net within a minute or so
Murphy 5 -- promising first half, but faded in the second
Hemed 4 -- a few good touches, but that's about it
Murray 4 -- immobile and slow, gave the ball away too much

Manu 6 -- offered something different and, on that basis, deserves a few more opportunities

Hughton 3 -- got way too much wrong: should have started Stephens; as others have pointed out, that high defensive line against Hogan was always going to be problematic; failed to make substitutions at half-time, and delayed them too long thereafter. His post-match assessment was right and generous though.
