Ask your mate then, as he must have locked it.

Blackberries are a right royal pain in the arse, if you want to use internet you need to be hooked up to WiFi or have a Blackberry data plan on your contract. If the device was previously used on an office network or linked to a BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) then it could have an IT policy on it that without being VERY nice to the systems administrator who put the policy on is a right BUGGER to remove.
