Couldn't a taser have been used?

I'm sure they would have done if they could have done as I imagine shooting someone is used as a last resort.

A taser shot causes the body to seize and muscles to contract. If he was holding the knife to the throat of the woman (or near the woman) tasering him could have caused him to involuntarily stab the woman. The fact it's the first police killing in three years shows they don't take the decision to shoot lightly at all so it was probably justified if they decided it was the correct course of action.
