Thinking of taking the family to Cyprus for a holiday. Never been before so I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good family resort/hotel?
Thanks in advance

Have been up to the Akamas region, north of paphos in Latchi. It's fairly quiet but would highly recommend looking in that area unless you want a busier resort. We stayed in a villa so can't recommend a hotel I'm afraid.

Been loads of times. For work and pleasure. Book a private villa rather than a hotel. Book flights seperatley and get a hire car. Don't piss around with a package holiday to a 'resort'.

Lovely people, but IMHO many parts of Cyprus have been spoilt (often by Brits)

Places such as Protaras (fig tree bay) were once beautiful quiet fishing villages, yet now have drive through McDonalds etc. pathos was wonderful, but now far too commercialised or me. Families with young kids may love it.

I was fortunate enough to work there for a while, and it is a wonderful place, they are just a little harder to find now.

Live here now, it depends what you're looking for, price range etc etc etc. It's great place to go for a holiday, but to give any sensible advice on WHERE to go I need more info. Every family is different and looking for different things.

Thanks for the advice so far. We are looking for somewhere that is not too busy but still a little bit lively with good bars & restaurants and maybe 1 or 2 clubs for my son & his girlfriend to visit. Need a good place for my younger son to enjoy also.

Limassol and other tourist areas are now over run by the Russians, they have bought up loads there, we have been there many times, a great place in my opinion, we have a good friend who lives in Northern Cyprus and she loves it there.

This.
The in-laws lived there for 7 years and its a nice mix - some decent restaurants, bars etc and a lovely walk along the coast to the livlier resort and nice beaches of Protaras.
The wife obviously knows the area well, and is a travel agent to boot so PM me if you want me to put u in touch with her for a bit of professional advice!
Oops... meant to quote NBSCLs post about Pennera....

i've been to protaras 3 times with my family. we love it. lovely people, good food, lots of entertainment, amazing beaches and clear sea.
the vrissiana is probably our favourite hotel. the biggest downfall is that cyprus is a bit dearer than most med. countries. for me it's worth it. have a great time

I have been there many times and was considering buying a bar there in 1995 but was diagnosed with mouth cancer so we aborted the move. We re going there on Saturday but a warning to people is that it has got a lot more expensive as a holiday destination since it joined the Euro. In a recent shopping survey in a Sunday newspaper it showed a shopping basket in this country as costing about £79 the cheapest in Europe was Spain at £57 and the dearest Cyprus at £98 so if considering going self catering take this into account.

Fig tree bay.. Years ago i learnt to Scuba dive from there, with TransDivers based in The Capo Bay Hotel.

Even £57 is expensive for a shopping basket Ben

the chinese are next. the ROC are encourage them too buy property as a foothold into the EU. dont seem to have learnt much from their Russian love in.

on a positive note i am a second for the akamas peninsular. very very quiet though. the occupied areas are of course beautiful, but ****ing depressing for the most part. awash with army bases and decaying abandoned churches.

If you want bars restaurants and clubs, but stuff for kids as well, you best bet is either Limassol of Pafos, personally I prefer Limassol (pafos is becoming horrendously run down atm). There loads of hotels to choose from depending on your budget. It has good beaches, food restaurants and good clubs (including Guaba, which is a beach club and regularly gets voted into the top 50 clubs in the world lists). There also quieter areas. The Fasouri Waterpark is pretty damn good for kids and older kids alike. A friend of mine came over for a week recently with his kids and they loved. If you're coming all the way to Cyprus though, I would advise hiring a car and travelling outside whatever town you stay in, there is a LOT to seem the mountains are beautiful and it is worth driving into the North as well, which is now easy.

It's hardly overrun. I live in Limassol, and yes, there are a lot of Russians here, but the main thing I notice as a result is more cute young women walking round not wearing much - hardly a negative effect!
