"And Smith must score..."

Evenin' all.
Sorry if this is an old chestnut (as it undoubtedly is, I know) - but, having just downloaded the excellent and illuminating BBC/Danny Baker series "Match Of The Eighties", I was inevitably waiting to hear that famous line in the FA Cup final coverage - and yet, from John Motson, it didn't come. Instead, he said: "It's Smith... and Bailey's saved! What an amazing opportunity for Brighton to win the cup, and how sadly wasted."

So was the famous line from the presumably-lesser-watched ITV coverage? Or the radio? Or simply apocryphal?

By the by, those programmes are superb nostalgia-fests (and not just because, that season excepted, Spurs were actually winning things). Shoddily-makeshift dug-outs. Dogs running onto the pitch. Incessant references to Norman Whiteside's age. Desperately-flamboyant combovers. The likes of Ipswich, Swansea and Coventry challenging at the top. Swarms of thousands of supporters enjoying mass, joyous bundles. Glenn Hoddle. Glenn Hoddle. And more Glenn Hoddle.

Danny Baker: "So Liverpool and Manchester United finally managed to shake off... Watford and Brighton.
Yeah, it seems a long time ago, doesn't it?"

:glare:

(Actually, that thought of a lesser-known, simultaneous ITV commentary - RIP Hugh Johns. Apparently he could be very, very good?)

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
"It led to the cry of "And Smith Must Score" from BBC Radio 2 commentator Peter Jones that later became immortalised in the title of a Brighton fanzine"
