Fernando Alonso's new Renault contract will make him Formula One's highest current earner, the Spanish daily El Mundo claims.

In a deal that is set to be signed by the Spaniard and announced by Renault imminently, Alonso will earn even more than Ferrari's reigning world champion Kimi Raikkonen in 2008, the newspaper said.

Brazilian rookie Nelson Piquet Jr will be his team-mate, while Alonso's initially two-year contract - estimated at $50m per season - will assign him minimal sponsor commitments, contain an 'exit' clause, as well as clear number one status.

"Renault has won the race," El Mundo declared, referring to recent speculation of the double world champion's links with Red Bull, Toyota and Honda.

"Alonso will return to the team where he amassed his glory."

Another Spanish newspaper, El Pais, reports that McLaren boss Ron Dennis is waiting to know Alonso's final plans for 2008 before deciding between Pedro de la Rosa and Heikki Kovalainen for the vacant seat alongside Lewis Hamilton.

Alonso is expected to make his Renault test debut in late January at Valencia, in the new car.

Meanwhile Ferrari via their lackeys in the FIA have managed to keep the new McClaren from gaining approval until less than a month before the start of the next season.

Renault have escaped any sort of punishment at all in a similar scenario to the Ferrari/McClaren case.

If Hamilton thought they were all out to get him last season, it's gonna be nothing on this one!!

Ferrari rule F1 and they're not gonna let Hamilton race them in a car that's as good as theirs again if there's any way they can handicap McClaren

Good to see he's been clever enough to insist that he is undisputed No 1 in his new contract this time

Great, good to see the mono-browed whinger go to a team in decline! Like to see Piquet Jr give him a run for his money too.
This FIA Vs Mclaren thing is getting stupid. Given the outrageous fine they got, they are not going to comprimise another year by putting anything else on the car! sadly the FIA (Ferrari International Assistance) will probably stoop to saying the Mclarens got 4 wheels and a steering wheel, surely that concept was copied from Ferrari!!
The FIA are now trying to gag Martin Brundle (one of the few people with integrity in F1) after he accused them of a Mclaren Witchunt. Sadly he was 100% correct!

I hope McLaren go for Kovalainen over de la Rosa, he's a far better driver in every respect.

I believe this will be the case but I guess it depends if McClaren need money in through sponsorship in which case it will be De La Rosa as his old man owns a huge supermarket chain or something in Brazil.
