This is like when Dick Knight promised 5 signings or whatever it was. If this window goes wrong then at least we can fly this kid in and put a positive spin on it, 'as good as a new signing' etc.

Exactly. Bringing in Alexis Macallister - Boca Juniors / Argentina U23s number 10 - is EXACTLY like signing Shane McFaul.

I still think it will be down to the player whether he comes now or at the end of the season. I can't see much motivation for him to leave 5 games from the end of Boca season with the chance of winning a title for the club he supported as a kid. Especially with trips to Wolves & Norwich on the cards

There' still 10 hours till kick off. Buenos Aires to Southampton international, cab to the ground, he might get there for half time. We could still name him on the bench, he could get that 30 yard winner tonight

There is no flight direct Buenos Aires to Southampton but there is one to Brussels where he could pick up Percy and then over to Gatwick followed by a internal flight to Bournemouth finally a quick drive to the ground just in time to catch the team bus home :D

Even if he doesn't come this month, that's mac Allister, White and probably Molumby/Clarke who will be in next seasons squad without having to make a single signing. The plan is starting to come to light.

Wonder how the championship would change that plan

Leeds would certainly go for White if promoted.

So

Is it the case that he needs to come back during the window for him to be eligible to play for us this season?

or could we play him if he were to come back at the end of the Argentine season?

He can join at any time. He doesn't need to be named in the squad due to his age and he has only played for Boca this 'season' so not in breach of the 2 club rule.

Loans can only be recalled in the January window.

He might not be recalled, as he loan contract ends in 5 games. He is our player already so we don't need to re-sign him.
That is interesting. If his loan contract expires then that sounds possible.

I'm all but certain that you are wrong. His registration is with Boca. If that registration is not transferred to us during the window, I'm sure he cannot play this season. His age is not relevant, to the transfer of the registration. Were he a free agent, THEN he could 'sign' outside the window. But he's not.

The point is all moot anyway, the Argentinian ‘season’ doesn’t finish until May.

Whilst the first league stage is completely shortly then the league is split and they play further games until May. Plus the group stages of the Copa Libertadores start.

The medium and long term recruitment strategy is good.

We have a current problem though - Andone left after the previous transfer window shut. That cannot have been in the plan. We have 10 days to solve that one.

I think we could recall him (end the loan) without him having to physically come over here - he could stay out there and come over after the internationals he's involved in have finished.
I don't think we'll get a pre-season friendly with Boca if we do though!

Their league season doesn’t finish in 5 games time. The first part of the season does but they go on to another format where the 24 team league is split into two groups of 12. The season doesn’t finish until end of May.

The only way Mac Allister will be able to play for us this season is if we terminate the loan deal in the January transfer window. Even if he’s on International duty until the 8th or 9th of Feb we have to end the deal before the end of the month so his registration can be lodged with the FA/PL.
