Stevenage's Alistair John is recovering in hospital after being stabbed outside his Croydon home on Sunday.

The club report that the 19-year-old winger underwent exploratory surgery after the incident and is understood to be in a comfortable condition.

Chairman Phil Wallace told his club's website: "We don't quite know the full details of what happened yet.

"Only that Ally left his house to go outside to see a group of people, was stabbed and staggered back inside."

Wallace continued: "The reports we've had are that he's in hospital but in no danger and that no organs have been damaged, so we're relieved to hear that above all else.

"This is such a traumatic thing to happen in a young man's life and goodness knows what his family went through.

"We will let people know how he is as soon as we hear that he is able to leave hospital.

"I'm sure he'll be keen to get back and see the lads but all he should think about now is getting better. Our best wishes go to him and his family and we wish him a speedy recovery."

John joined Stevenage in August after being released by Charlton at the end of last season.

The winger, who had loan spells at Brighton and Torquay last season, has made three substitute appearances for the Blue Square Premier leaders.
