Clearly, we were playing like champions, having annihilated Wolves 3-1 at Molineux and Crystal Palace 3-0 at the Goldstone in the eight days before this match. Sea-gulls!

Gerry Ryan's goal, probably the best individual effort I've ever witnessed (live). :clap2:
Them were the days........

Was Ray Clarke any good?

Ray clarke was a Mansfield legend when theywent up ahead of ourselves and the Croydon bunch. prolific scorer in the lowere leagues and also had a spell abroad.

Was OK but not really a top league player.

Never forget that Ryan goal, he got a few vital goals in his time. What happended to Ray Clarke ? I can never remember but I thought he was a reasonable player.

Heady days. I think this was a third win on the bounce, having won 3-1 at Wolves and beaten the 'team of the 80s' 3-0 on Boxing Day. Pulling well away from the bottom after that dodgy start, and playing good football in doing so.

I remember walking out of the ground after that game thinking we could go places with this team.

You're correct according to the original post.

And obviously, it was our last game of the 70s. So who got the last goal of the decade?

It's a shame that not all of Gerry Ryan's run is on that clip. Most accounts I've read have suggested it was a 75 yard run...

Another retro video that may be interest... I was wondering what it would be like to have all the Peter Ward goals I could get hold of together on one vid. Here is the result:

I was at that game, aged fourteen and barely able to see the action as I was in a packed West Stand, behind the home dugout.

I remember another good defeat of City - 4 - 0 I believe it was on the way to Wembley. This made all the sweeter by the fact that my Man. City supporting (and season ticket holding) friend accompanied us to the game!

Think Michael Robinson got two of the goals. I rember the laughter that went up when, at half time the "....in the event of a replay" information was given out by which time Albion were cruising at 2 - 0 up and City looked a beaten team already. Almost felt sorry for my mate!

He got his revenge as I think City beat us 1-0 at the last First Divison game of the season although I think we may have already been down by then.

We were not down at the start of the match, but needed to win our last two games to have a chance of staying up.

Dennis Tueart scored in front of the North Stand to relegate us, which was a sickening feeling, the suspicion that we would never be in the top flight again was already there.

City thought they had avoided relegation by beating us, as they only had to draw at home to Luton the following Saturday to stay in the top flight. Luton had to win to stay up themselves, it was 0-0 with a couple of minutes left at Bitter Central and then..........
