I claimed and got back PPI from a loan and credit card. I knew I had PPI at the time as this was extra cover. The reason I claimed was that unknown to me at the time ( hidden in the small print ) was that I would never have been able to make a claim to cover on going payments if I was ill due to the fact that my employer at the time paid me sick pay. Had the bank asked me about sick pay at the time of signing for the PPI cover then it would have come to light that I didn't really need it. Also, in regards to seemingly getting larger amounts back than the payments made, I believe it's compound interest that is added to your original premiums that make the sums larger.

I've elected to use a specialist PPI claims company for a couple of reasons.

a) I've discovered 29 different financial services packages I've had [or jointly with Mrs SS] and I don't wan't to be chasing around all of them [my time wasted where I'm expecting f**k-all anyway]
b) I'm not particularly good at complaining and if they say "no", I'll just accept without challenge [I expect the claims company to be a bit tougher and in-the-know/ been there before and know which buttons to press - kinda thing]
c)Yes, they're charging 33%, but as BG stated earlier, I'll still be getting 67% of something I was expecting zero for.
d) Some of the financial institutions I used no longer exist - I'm hoping/assuming there is an organisation that's fielding their claims honourably and fairly [or are these "no-chance" claims?]

For me, it's a "shot-to-nothing" - if they come back saying "hard luck chum, nowt for you" - I've only lost a few hours of my time collating a list of all the financial products I've used and signing a load of forms. They've had to do all the chasing / phoning / letters / etc. If I get anything back at all it'll be pure bonus.

What's to lose?

I have just recently done the PPI myself and received all, about 10, back with either a no, you didn't have ppi or we cannot find an account. They are asking for more details, so need to look further. There is a chance I did not have any ppi as I was mainly self employed and the ppi would not have covered me. So, I am checking in case I was conned.

For those thinking of doing this, if you go via a company you still have to give all details and fill out forms, so I cannot see a point of using one. I did all of mine online, not one needed to be posted. Took me about 1.5-2 hour's one evening whilst watching tv.

If I get no luck, the next step is the Financial Ombudsmen, they check everything for you for free.

Someone asked about how long you have to wait, companies have 8 weeks to reply. No reply and you can go straight to the Financial Ombudsmen.

What are the steps you are going to take where they have said they have no record of you holding an account. As per a previous post I had rthis with a mortgage which I definitely had with Brittania.

Not sure to be honest. I will search around my paper records but don't hold out much hope.

There must be some way of proving it as in my case I KNOW I had a mortgage with them and I would think that it contained PPI. I have tried my bank but they said their records of my account and payments made does not go back that far and are destroyed after about 10 years.

Had exactly the same problem with Lloyds. Gave up in the end, I assume if I claimed through a company they would have the same problem.

The company I used came up against the same problem. I am considering writing to the ombudsman but not sure of the ombudsman for what so if anybody has any suggestions or addresses I would be grateful.

I used to work for a bank ombudsman in the mid 80's he said what the banks were doing was quite unbelievable and scandelous, let's face they have only got worse.

I would guess he would be well past retirement now, but he was a proper bloke.

I claimed through a company because I didnt get any satisfaction doing it myself and my view was that they charged a % but without it I wouldnt gave got anything. Most companies said they couldnt find me having had an account with them. In fact this is the same answer from Brittania Building Society who I most definitely had a mortgage with in 1980s but am unable to move on as I have no details and they say I didnt have one. They told the company I used Direct Redress the same. So where do I go from here, just accept that I have lost the claim and any money paid?

i dont believe PPI was a thing in the 80's, if it was around it wasnt common. its not a given that a mortgage, loan or CC had PPI even in the 00's though it was by then common.

Going through the claims process at the moment... Have found 4 companies so far who I had PPI with. I was a student at the time and was in part time employment, they told me it would have covered the repayments if I'd lost my job, but as I was mainly a student I wasn't covered.

That is a view expressed by people on MSE so it would appear that I wouldnt have paid PPI so thanks for the info .

Got so fed up with the persistent phone calls and letters wasting my time I thought being clever I'd waste some of theirs. So picking one of the many letters I filled in my details and proceeded to tick every box in an effort to cause as much hassle for them as they had me. Well it backfired on me rather nicely when it turned out I had a claim as it had been added to a credit card without my knowledge. It was the easiest £3500 I could ever get. Moral of the story, apply even if you think it is not worthy it may be worthwhile.

Got some back from one PPI but also had to pay fees to the PPI company for a failed claim so lost some too. My neighbour got £ 9000 from his various claims . So if you don't try you dont't get .
