What's genuinely troubling is that the Tories aren't any better and there's currently no credible third alternative.

I could have got Goldsmith in. Listen mate, sell yourself as a Tory but maintain a clear distance from the PM. Go large on your Green credentials, go large on Heathrow even if you've split opinion on that one. Make it clear you are hugely sympathetic with Brexit.
Why ? London voters want a pragmatic independently minded figure who still has access to the corridors of power. They want someone who keep the government in check via a quickly arranged meeting or a word in an ear.
Accentuate the DIFFERENCES you have to your FRIENDS in power.
Easy job. Alternatively get central office to organise the whole thing.
If Khan gets in, Goldsmith (and the Tories) can only blame themselves.
Imagine what this lot are like negotiating with other countries ?

yes, he's previously always looked like an indepedent with a Tory rosette for convenience. somewhere along the line he made the mistake of being controlled by central party, lost his green hue and most recently allowed himslef to get involved in petty, mudslinging politics.

Just got home after a few beers after work. Switched on newsnight and a labout mp is on slagging off corbyn. What has happened in the elections?

Bullshit article from the Torygraph in my opinion.
Tories are really clutching at straws. Goldsmith can be a popular mayor and importantly go down well overseas - particularly in America. I can see it now - London has elected Hugh Grant and the chat shows would have loved him like Boris.
But has he kicked the ball over from 2 yards.
All he had to do was not play the race card and try and drag Khan into the Livingstone f*** up. London really is a melting pot and not just racially. People from all over this country too come to work here. It's full of people "just passing through".
When you live here you just have to be tolerant. Tolerant of people being rude to you, tolerant of getting knocked over in the street, learn to stand on the right side of the escalator etc...
What are modern Londoners suspicious of ? Someone who causes diversion, because that's the last thing you want. We're back on the tube after the bombings grin and carry on.
Boris was canny. Straight back on the streets after his holiday during the riots. He got it and I'm uncomfortable that Goldsmith doesn't.
If he creeps in, the race thing will fester, but he could have walked in. Who the hell is advising the Tory Party these days ?
John McDonnell speaking very sensibly on the tv now. He's likes Goldsmith and has worked with him on a number of London issues. What the hell was he thinking ?

There is a level of complexity when you vote up here I guess. I've had to vote three times tonight, one slip with a second and first choice.
It's influenced by a number of things.
Who you don't want to get in, who you want to "mix" up and politically you would like to vote for but don't like what's going on with their party at the moment.
1) Like the bloke, not perfect but has a chance of winning. Don't like the other and the others are effectively wasted,
2) Pretty sure who will get the majority, but want some opposing voice. Don't support the party (they actually annoy me) but want their voice there. Don't care on the individual.
3) No idea what the mix will be - but threw in someone based on their party to help support the mix. Again would never vote for the party in a general election.
Unlike a general election/local election I only bother these days if it's marginal (*) I came home tonight feeling my voice was heard.
(*) I did last year because it was suspected of being so, but the result was the same. There is a law round here - Labour MP / Conservative Council.

If the Labour Party are to win the next GE, they are going to need an awful lot more than. 1.7% swing.
The Tories are in the middle of a civil war over Europe, with hugely unpopular plans over school academies, a junior doctors strike, back peddling on tax credits. The list goes on.
Let's face it, with a decent leader, Labour would be making huge gains in these elections.
Wrong leader. He might be popular with grassroots supporters, but middle Engkand, who he needs on board to get elected, will not vote Labour whilst he's in charge.

I think the results are looking bad for labour long term. it's not bad enough that Corbyn can be replaced, not good enough for Corbyn to silence the critics in the parliamentary party. So more of the same ineffectual leadership and internal division for the time being.
