My abiding memory of Steve Piper was the 76/77 season and especially his goal in the home win v Sheffield Wednesday that sealed our promotion, in front of 30,000 at the Goldstone. Seem to remember a picture of the goal in the argus the next day. Wonder whether that's still around?

What awful news to wake up to. As others have mentioned he didn't have the fan profile of the likes of Ward, Horton and Mellor, but he was very much a part of that great 70s side. When my friends and I were having the post-match discussion it was obligatory for someone to say "I thought Piper had a good game" and the rest of us would just nod sagely and agree.

And 64 .... Way, way too young.

RIP Pipes, and obviously deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Very sad news. As a local lad everyone either knew or knew someone who knew Pipes. Always gave his all for the Albion and missed out on a big transfer because of knee trouble. Played locally for years after the Albion and continued to give everything. Watched us at withdean and Amex over the years, and his son in the youth set up.
RIP Pipes.

OMG that is so sad, he was a regular visitor to the Amex. Some great memories particularly scoring at Roker park in a 2-0 win. RIP an Albion legend for me.

Pipes scored one of my all-time favourite Albion goals during the comeback from 2-0 down at home to Millwall to win 3-2. We were attacking the South Stand goal and he ran in from outside the area and launched himself at a corner from the right. The header was perfect and the ball bulleted right into the top corner.

Shocked by this news. I remember Steve breaking into the team as a young prospect and rapidly becoming a key player.

RIP Steve.

Very sad news. As stated above, one of our own. A Rudyard Kipling boy if I recall. A wholehearted player and an unsung part of the 76/77 team and its ridiculous home record - W 19 D 3 L1. Steve was one of only three players to play every game that season.

RIP.
