5 x 6 hour days per week. I get a 15 minute lunch break in that 6 hours. In my old job I used to work in Aldershot one day a week. That meant getting the 06:08 train from Brighton station. I was at my desk in Aldershot for 08:30 and was never paid for my travelling time, although they bought my train ticket. I really don't miss that.

I worked my bollocks off in a shit job for not far off minimum wage for over 18 months with no recognition before this happened. Whenever they needed somebody to come in at 6am on a Saturday I would volunteer, even though I didn't get home from work on a Friday until 11:30pm. Whenever they needed somebody to come in early to fill a gap, it would normally end up being me because I needed the money. I constantly had the highest KPI in my department to the point I was pulling the entire department to it's daily target for a solid 6 month and was being paid the least because of my age. Even when the head of the department wasn't in and I was asked to run the department I was paid the least, in fact I didn't get paid a penny extra for it.
I then get forced out of that department by a new boss who had been moved in to our department after openly calling every English person working there lazy etc and wasn't reprimanded for it. When I moved department, me and another new arrival to that area actually sorted out a lot of what was going wrong in that department, improving the productivity by about 20%. Still, hardly any recognition. When the Christmas rush started to come around I worked quite a lot of overtime 20-25 hours a week, and was normally underpaid for it, or not paid at all so every week I had to go up and argue the toss constantly.
Then 2 weeks before Christmas I get told I had until January 31st of January to use all my holiday up or I would lose it, and not be paid for it. This despite the fact that office staff were paid for any unused holiday. This left me 3 weeks to use up 10 days of holiday. They told me this at the point for the exact reason of screwing me out of the overtime because the company would rather pay 3 people to do 10 hours each than pay me for 30 as you only got paid OT rates after you'd done 5 hours of OT.
So to spite them for 18 months of absolute bullshit I booked off 5 half-days for the following week, and turned up for 5 hours of overtime every day (the maximum allowed). Turn up at 9:30, work until 14:30 as overtime. Then work until 18:30 before going home on holiday. Go to bed at a reasonable time, wake up repeat.
So worked 9 hours Monday, paid for 13.
Worked 9 hours Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday - paid for 15.5 hours.
Came in and worked 8 hours on the Saturday too.
They then changed the rules so that you can't do overtime on days when you had holiday. If you want to know why the UK is going to the dogs then look at the company I work for who'd bend every rule in the books to pinch pennies, rather than me who ended up working there for 27 months until I was at my wits end due to all the shit they put me through. The last straw was when I was basically forced out of the company after not signing a new contract on a lower wage, for the sole purpose of saving the company 40p an hour.

Did you ever think of taking legal advice on this?
Seems that they were breaking all sorts of employment law.
But still think my reply to your initial post was valid (without the detail)

I've got out of there and can't even be arsed to go back there to argue with them.
They'll get what's coming there way one day. This is a company who employ people direct from Bulgaria if they can stump up the cash for a room in a shared house in Worthing and the travel. A company who have their own in house agency so they can get away with paying people less for their first 3 months of employment. Eventually they'll slip up or someone will die there due to their piss poor H&S regulations.

Contracted to 37 and a half hours over week but as my team is based in the US, I work extra hours in the evening so I don't wake up to shocks in the morning.

Again?- you haven't explained at all what your "better solution" entails. You are as muddled as ever followed by the customary retort that others then don't understand. You suggested, reasonably enough, that there might be a better solution. I countered by questioning what I assumed your solution might be, which you said was wrong. Have we heard what your solution actually is? No, so quite how you can talk about explaining again, is beyond me.

My words were 'surely we can come up with a better system than this' (or words to that effect). Go back and read it, I did not suggest that I have a superior system at any point. You are one again putting words in my mouth and deliberately misreading my posts. Either that or you are very dim, either way it is the same old same old.

You must be a secondary teacher? All of the primary teachers I know are doing 60 hrs/week term time.

No, I am Primary, but in Australia where we haven't quite managed to get to the ridiculous levels of admin that you have reached in the UK (although we are well on the way
). I am also a Science specialist which means I have a little less planning and assessment to do than the classroom teachers (although the face to face stuff is more consistently intensive).To be honest while in the classroom I pared back my hours to be closer to what I actually get paid for in order to spend time with my family and not completely exhaust myself. The work is more or less infinite and if you don't draw a line you end up working every hour possible like the people you know. This may have contributed to my move to a specialist position.
