3.5 million ruskies living in the US! Is Putin going to suggest annexing the USA to protect the rights of the ruskies there, just like they did in Crimea and eastern Ukraine!

Think you're confusing Nato for the EU. Whilst the three baltic states are members of both, I believe it is Nato that has the doctrine that an attack on one member is deemed an attack on all members.

yes, exactly this, not even Putin would step foot in a NATO country,he's crazy, but not stupid

doesn't help the Ukranians sadly, who will be sold down the river

Oh he would.

He's strategically inept, but tactically brilliant. And this makes him very dangerous.

no one is going to nuke anyone. it serves no purpose to either side. likewise, Putin isnt likly to start on Estonia and Latvia because they are in NATO and that would invoke a treaty obligation on everyone else to pile in. he has only gone into Ukraine because a) theres a genuine feeling that its part of a greater Russia and b) they arent in NATO or EU and he wants to stir it up so that they dont become so.

But why are Russian attack fighters taking an interest in Cornwall. Don't panic though the RNLI were out on major practice exercise tonight.

3 of Putin's overall aims presently are

1 - Fall of NATO
2 - Breakup of the EU
3 - Stopping fracking, in order to raise the Gas price.

He influence ( 3 ), and to a certain extent ( 2 ), by Europe wide funding of relevant organisations.

In order to achieve ( 1 ), he needs to be bold, and it's a risk / reward balance.

Send a few little green men into Estonia, deny everything and step back and see what happens. If article 5 is declared, and NATO doesn't respond then NATO is pretty much finished. If NATO does respond, then he can shrink away denying everything. Low risk / high potential reward for him.

My position is always one of anti-violence.

I think with the annexation of Crimea Putin had a point, despite the dubious referendum, he managed to minimise violence there. Eastern Ukraine is a mess - Russia is largely responsible for the violence, but so is the Ukrainian government. I think the West is dealing with it fairly well, as we are not currently contributing to the violence, although the sanctions have only seemed to have provoked Russia further and have been counter-productive.

I think the sanctions have been working, as Putin has been under pressure from the oligarchs from within his inner circle. Though largely, the average Russian is backing him. Makes for a difficult situation. China has injected much needed cash into the economy, though I can't imagine that lasting too long. The question now is what will Russia do when the money runs out. There may not be enough to fund the war, and China won't back a war as they've got interests in Ukraine and Russia which would see loses in their investments. Particularly the energy market...

That said, negotiations won't work as Putin holds the vast majority of the power.

Russian air force planes have been 'straying' into our airspace far more often than you think. It's nothing new and has been going on years.

Norway’s defence minister has said her country’s armed forces will be restructured so they can respond faster to what she called increased Russian aggression.

Ine Eriksen Soreide said that Russia had recently re-opened military bases in its far north that had been shut down after the cold war, and that there had also been an increase in flights by Russian warplanes close to Norwegian airspace.

And to think the defence experts think we are fighting a different war these days, the Ruskies never lost interest in being a super power, they've just convinced the West that they have whilst re building. We need to expedite Trident replacement fast!

Well Putin hasn't been seen in public for a week now, and uncharacteristically cancelled some important international meetings with no reason given.

Pictures released of him supposedly taken this week have been shown to be actually taken last week or before.

What skullduggery is happening in the Kremlin ?

As we speak he is probably stripped to the waist personally beating out a confession or two over the shooting of Boris Nemtsov.
