There have been a number of posters defending the right of Andorra to compete against the top European countries in qualifiers. If Gibraltar win their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, would they welcome matches against this "country"?

From Wiki:

On August 25, 2006, it was proposed that Gibraltar will become a provisional member of UEFA. However, a decision on granting this was postponed in October 2006 [2]. The decision was made on December 8, 2006 that Gibraltar will be made provisional members of UEFA: FIFA had announced two days earlier that their executive committee had "ruled that Gibraltar does not meet the statutory requirements to become a FIFA member", despite the fact that the Court of Arbitration in Sport had already ruled to the contrary[3].

On January 26, 2007 Gibraltar membership had been rejected by the UEFA Board with only 3 out of 52 votes supporting Gibraltar's claim. Spain was the strongest opponent to Gibraltar joining UEFA, even threatening to boycott any competition in which the Gibraltar national team would compete.[4]

The issue has again been referred back to the Court of Arbitration for Sport for a ruling.

Spain could kill two birds with one stone if they got to play Gibraltar away, thrash them on the pitch and take the island once the game was over, sorted.

Incidentally what is the population of Gibraltar?

I certainly have a lot less problems with the idea of playing Gibralter in a European Championship qualifier than I do ruddy Khazhkstan.

I, for one, would like to see more of Kazakhstan in European football

Kazakhstan greatest country in the world.
All other countries are run by little girls.
Kazakhstan number one exporter of potassium.
Other countries have inferior potassium.

Kazakhstan home of Tinshein swimming pool.
It’s length thirty meter and width six meter.
Filtration system a marvel to behold.
It remove 80 percent of human solid waste.

Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan you very nice place.
From Plains of Tarashek to Northern fence of Jewtown.
Kazakhstan friend of all except Uzbekistan.
They very nosey people with bone in their brain.

Kazakhstan industry best in world.
We invented toffee and trouser belt.
Kazakhstan’s prostitutes cleanest in the region.
Except of course for Turkmenistan’s.

Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan you very nice place.
From Plains of Tarashek to Norther fence of Jewtown.

Come grasp the mighty penis of our leader.
From junction with the testes to tip of its face!

Joking aside, Kazakhstan shares a border with China. New York is as close to London as Almaty is (3400 miles). The nearest EU member capital (Nicosia in Cyprus) is over 2300 miles away from Almaty. It's a complete and total farce that they are included in the European Championships or European qualifiers.

Gibraltar's population is about 29,000.........which is small even with compared to other small countries that are in UEFA

Andorra- 88,000
Faroe Islands- 48,700
Liechtenstein- 35,322

it is, however about the same size as San Marino

They are not as far east as Vladivostok, which is a few miles from the North Korean border...but also in Russia.

why ARE kazakhstan in uefa when the likes of tajikistan, turkmenistan etc are in the asian one?

how did they decide it all after the soviet union collapsed? did they just all get to choose which one they went in to?

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about that little chesnut!

This is true, but it's difficult to mitigate for a country the size of Russia, don't they go through something like 9 timezones? At least their capital is relatively (for Russia!) close to Europe.

According to http://www.uefa.com/uefa/news/kind=128/newsid=22335.html they left the Asian Confederation in 2001 and joined UEFA in 2002. I can see the benefits for the Kazakhs but not for UEFA. Quite possibly a political decision to give UEFA more power within FIFA.

And those three votes came from - wait for it...

But they have to play in Europe; they cannot play their neighbours.

exactly, it does make sense for israel to be in uefa really...........if they were drawn in a group with any of the countries around them it'd be a right old BOMB FEST

it'd be interesting if they got to a world cup and were drawn in the same group as, for example, Iran

Gibralta has roughly the same population as Littlehampton (just to put things in perspective, like).
