the Atkinson article seems to have triggered a lot of response, they do protest too much.

i understood all ICE get banned, including hybrids. EV or alternatives only available for sale from 2030.

its goes into more specifics, still boils down to cost. the inefficencies in conversion add to the cost of the fuel. funny they mentioned the extra wind needed, we'll need a lot more to replace gas sourced electricity for EVs too.

one obvious issue is not everyone has a driveway to park and charge on. they may not have a space outside their house at all, and rely on public charging points. of course if we are expecting EV to coincide with restricting vehicles, this may not be a problem.

thats a good one, same as copper, iron mines. its the ones in the jungle with kids digging with their hands we want to get rid of.

synthetic fuel has a cost issue. if you can do so with 100% certifiable green energy and get the cost low enough, the trade off is worth it. as i read it, if we cut duties its already commercially viable. question then is the agenda to make vehicles green, make us move to EV, or make us move...

hydrogen is heavy too once encased in large compressed cylinders. best use for hydrogen is grid level storage where large scale storage of surpluses, provide on-demand energy will out weigh the conversion losses.

i dont think they can do that unless they severely increase tax on cars. you must account for the convenience of personal transport, get in and go. thats worth a lot to people. many simply make journeys because they have the car, which otherwise wouldn't bother. i used to think simply better...

could just be not that many people want to cycle. trouble is there are more reasons not to cycle that to do so, before any demonisation. people like to keep cycling to lesuire, i've noticed at work many talk about cycling but drive/bus/walk to work and shops, leaving the bike to weekends.

yep, shorter life with built in end of life of batteries, leading to more regular purchases of new vehicles. i think thats one of the points Atkinson was making? mandating vehicles to be smaller, lighter, higher MPG longer life and recyclable would be better legislation. expect some rowing...

admire the faith, though the comparison to CPU highlights the flawed thinking. CPU core architecture hasnt changed much in many decades, computational improvements come from miniaturisation and parallelisation. there is only so far you can go with either without hitting another wall. it takes...

often overlooked in the EV discussion, currently there wont be the linear tiers of second hand filtering down. see all comments about recycling batteries, they go out of the EV ecosystem, so thats a major cost, along with expensive design/process to have changeable batteries. we'll buy new on...

the problem is we are driving forward on an assumption that technology change will happen. there are other drivers of course, environment etc, but this may likely be a case that an advance reduces utility. battery tech hasnt really moved for decades, there are physical constraints to overcome...

more like 20 years, and the real advance of phones came about at a confluence of decades of improvements in LED display tech and processor miniaturisation. a problem with the assumption we'll just find tech solution is often innovations dont scale outside the labs, either in production or...

not really a problem, along with charging mid journey. in the future the private ownership of cars will be preserve of middle classes with a nice semi-detached, wealthy with a car park allocation in city. everyone else will be served by a fleet of shared/corporate owned vehicles, either pooled...
