I think the plan is to score enough to ensure the draw at present.

Read was the victim of this obsession with keepers who can bat. He never really performed at the crease in the test arena. But I'd rather have a keeper who averages 20 than one who averages 35, lets more byes through, and would drop Ricky Ponting before he had scored on a chance that the less...

I can only see us winning with the fortune of a cloudy morning and swinging conditions- as well as winning good tosses. We can bowl them out in the right conditions. The problem is good weather and flat pitches. Still, we'll win the usual Oval test when it's a dead rubber.

Harmison/Hoggard & Broad/Anderson were all effective in pushing us up the test rankings. Statham and Trueman didn't actually play together in that many tests did they ?

Sessions like this make me realise how starved we are in the bowling department. Anderson can still cut it at the highest level, but has never been outstanding against Australia. Broad gets a lot for not many in one Test, and then fades out for many more.

Seven left handers ? Must be a record.

It tends to work one of both ways, but I think that is true of a captain in any position. Graham Gooch's average as skipper was phenomenal, he thrived on it. I agree with what you say about bowlers though.

Not sure about your thoughts on captains that open. A large number have been successful. Mark Taylor would be my best example.
