What bread are you using that absorbs mayo to that extent?
Butter is for life, not just for cheesecakes.
Always butter everything, everywhere.
Everywhere.
Seriously though, I get my butter from my local butchers. I sometimes have to resist the temptation to just eat it straight from the dish.

I prefer it, but Mrs Earle insists on Anchor Lighter. I still remember the taste of butter though...
There are two poles in every Wetherspoons. One as a long range service to help the chef push the start button on the microwave and one to stir the slop tray before it gets poured back into the barrel.
There used to be loads more but they’ve all left since Brexit.
Is the right answer.
Anything and mayo or mustard and mayo doesn’t need butter. Nor does cheese and pickle.
Bacon and sausage sarnies need both sides buttered with brown sauce.
I can take or leave it with beef. Butter with English mustard but no real need with horseradish cream or Dijon so long as you don’t mind the spice that comes with lots of condiment.
No one butters the bun on a chicken burger, which can be chicken, mayo and lettuce just like a sandwich.
It depends on the filling. If mayonnaise or peanut butter is appropriate, then one or no buttered slices is just fine.
